Therapy on Monday was interesting. Therapist was late because reception didn’t tell her I was there so I started in a bad mood. That’s not a negative though as it spurred me to tell her how I felt judged by her. That led to a better understanding of language differences (she’s Chinese and has English as a second language) and has given me permission to speak up and ask for clarification if/when she says something that doesn’t land right with me. That’s a good thing.
She also got up and drew things on a whiteboard to illustrate her thinking which is a first for me in a therapy session. But it was useful. I have homework that I’m prevaricating over doing so instead of getting on with it yesterday I ordered a couple of physical books, did some housework, caught up on four episodes of Andor and slept.
Also last night I went to Sadler’s Wells and saw Ballet B C (as in British Columbia) perform a wonderful double bill. Frontier (by Crystal Pite) has been reworked for this specific company of dancers and was extraordinary. It’s barely lit and features most of the dancers in black and masked. It’s about the unseen, dark matter, the subconscious and it’s truly phenomenal.
The second piece was also made for this specific company of dancers and was a dangerous piece. Difficult to describe but it’s about life, birth, death and everything in between.
The danger comes from the surface treatment of the stage. It’s very slippery. It’s covered in ash. That ash moves. Marks are not clear as they may be covered in ash rather than visible. The dancers are socked or barefoot.
There’s ballet, tap, and some of the dancers sing beautifully too.
I’ve found trailers for both pieces and the company is on tour. If you’re at all curious then go see it as it’s by far the best thing I’ve seen in a long time.
