Yep Roland I think they also mentioned that there is one main wholesaler and that they were having specific issues about obtaining supply.I too thought Wes Streeting was being evasive and good to see the publicity around Creon shortages.
I thought I heard Pancreatic Cancer UK say they had asked the Government to take action; to convene a task force to take over the supplies of PERT; to have a National co-ordinated supply of PERT. Pancreatic Cancer UK have a 5 point plan which is well explained on their website. Somewhere in this mornings interviews I thought I heard them say that distribution would (or perhaps it was should) be managed by a sole wholesaler; that last point was, in my opinion, not necessarily ideal - throttling all supplies through one source could be a contrary solution, the commercial market can be at its very best when a free market exists.
The Department of Health say shortages of raw materials across Europe are causing this problem. The Pancreatic Cancer UK Nurse said she thought that about 61k people in UK were affected by PERT shortages, ie a big enough problem to need resolution and she wanted Gov't to tap into other
regulated supply sources, outside Europe eg US and Australia.
She (and I think DoH agree or were the original source of thus snippet) believed this problem is going to go on into 2026. If that is the case, it is almost unhelpful - in that for another Nation in a different Continent cranking up their production for only a few months, even 12 months, is prohibitive. Most manufacturing industries carry relatively small quantities of reserve stocks and gear their production throughput to regular repeat orders, year on year. Particularly with a product like PERT that has a clear shelf life. Australia may be a large continent but has a relatively small population; so their reserves are likely to be comparatively small. Whether the USA is better placed to increase production for a limited period then scale down again, buffering this from bigger reserves, might be more feasible.
It seems to all be traceable back to Swine fever in Europe (but from Asia?) affecting the availability of natural porcine ingredients.
It's been previously said in other PERT/Creon threads that Pancreatic Cancer UK's website is a good place to get up to date information. Link below:
