Hi, @Wendal, worn track rod (ends) can lead to accelerated tyre wear. So postponing their replacement might be cost inefficient. However:Funny day with car as took it in for new tracking rods but they rang me at 3 saying could not do job as compressor was not working. Was not happy they let me know so late in day but the mechanic said I really did not need to rebook as they were not as bad as first told and would probably last another 6-9 months.
Thought would leave them and saved me some money well for a while anyway.
Assessing the state of steering linkage can be very subjective. If someone uses a long enough lever, then even brand new factory fitted steering can be made to move sufficiently to infer that parts need renewing. I had a theoretically reputable service garage sending me a short video demonstrating worn track rod ends. Since I'd had a comprehensive steering alignment check with my new tyres only a few days before, I went back to the tyre provider, who demonstrated me how easy it was to manipulate the "evidence" on my car. Reassured by that I ignored the service garage report and no other MOT in the next 5 years have reported this problem. So your mechanic is possibly spot on, but worth asking "how bad" with increased tyre wear in mind. I know you seem to clock up a fair annual mileage.
