What should i ask if the results actually come through today. ?
The C peptide came thru at just under middle range 800. The GAD came thru but the doc hadnt seen it so i wasnt given result.

Just ask the precise result and have a pen ready to write it down. The results of the antibodies tests should be positive or negative for each specific antibody. If they only tested for GAD, there would be a number, I believe. Write down everything and ask for the units too, if appropriate.

What you mustn’t let them palm you off with is Fine, Normal, OK, “Doctor says it’s fine”, etc. Get numbers/results not comments!

Hi Nurse phoned. The Peptide was 800. I didnt get the antibody result but it should go onto my website. They are sending me to the hospital to talk thru possibilities. BUT Ive done well with 1000mg metformin
I had trouble gettintg approx gms of carbs per meal. She kept saying other things have carbs not just potatoes
Grrrr i know that .
Im getting results of 5.6 - 9.at present with some occasional 10s 12 s 14. So if i get rough basal carbs. Im bright enough , and have a carb measuring set of scales, to work out how to improve if that's possible.
I can take results to hospital appt.

Yes this is correct. 0-11 is GAD normal anything over is positive.

The fact that they’re sending you to hospital could mean a number of things but I’m wondering if the most likeliest of those things is that you’re not Type 2. Again, if you’re Type 1/LADA early introduction of insulin will preserve your remaining beta cells.

Early in diagnosis (Type 1) I could miss insulin and get results in the 3s. I wouldn’t worry so much about your blood glucose results because they won’t really be overly helpful if you’re cutting carbs anyway. If you are LADA, it’s best to get insulin in ASAP and eat normally.

Do post your results when they’re on the website 🙂

@Inka Yes LADA . Sorry There maybe a chance i can use Metformin and carbs. As i've done quite well. Are you thinking that it has to be insulin now. I believe nurse said that Im producing some insulin .

That would be your decision @Jenny105 You need to balance things - your weight, your quality of life, etc. What you don’t want to do is struggle on too long and delay the introduction of insulin too long after the point at which it can help you. Sometimes with LADA, insulin is introduced too slowly or too late, and things can suddenly go haywire.

Right it was always a chance i was LADA, sadly i didnt understand the nurses instructions initially. Nor did hubby
So here are the LADA results
Glut.Acid decarboxylase ab. 17.7 U/ml normal is 5. ABNORMAL
1 A-2 Antibodies 2 .8 normal 7.5 NORMAL
Zinc trnsporter 8 Antibody 10.2 normal 15.00 Normal

C peptide result was 800 normal

Does Diabetes UK help with LADA issues of this type ?? :D

I will take notes to the hospital appointment , listen and weigh up if i have a choice.

Yes, LADA is just a form of Type 1, sometimes with a few Type 2 elements. There are other people with LADA here, and others who are LADA but just call themselves Type 1.

I think if it was me, what would guide me is my normal diet. I would want to eat a normal healthy diet which was balanced. So, if I wasn’t able to do that on only Metformin, that would be when I considered insulin.

I have been on low carb diet, then a bit higher carbs . My score of 96 in the blood test was the initial result. It hasnt been done again .
My finger prick tests was 18.6. came down to 4.7 - 10, With a few more carbs it was 5.9 - 9 but occasional 10 or 12 or 14.
At the moment Im trying a low carb diet with regular fingerpricks plus higher cal foods to aid the weight. The hospital apt might be before Xmas.

Thing is Jen - there's nowt about treating your diabetes that is actually mega scary and because LADA always lands up needing that, why medics hesitate in suggesting small doses of it sooner rather than later, I don't really know. I would have thought a gentle more gradual start might be less frightening - but there again of course - none of us get the choice.

As you know , i was very confused at the beginning . I wasnt given much guidance. I felt ''litigation '' in the air. So for 3 m Ive been stumbling around in no mans land. At least the nurse said it wouldnt be long til a hospital appointment 🙂::(o_O)
Is there a LADA group in site or does it go under type 1 .....
I feel a bit less concerned tonight - my only concern is not making the condition worse (if thats possible😉 **!!??<<&>>

Sounds encouraging eg eat normally - whee 🙂 ..... my only concern is re driving and hypos.
If i have a couple of jelly babies @ set time before starting would that be ok?. rhetorical. - slightly tongue in cheek
I drive max 7 mins there and 7 miles back from1 hr doggy hill walk - slightly tongue in cheek 😉 he he.
I need to get my service dog to safe off lead area.everyday. A requirement of Hearing Dogs for Deaf.

There are a number of people with LADA here @Jenny105 @DaveB is one, I think, but there are lots more. As I said, many simply call themselves Type 1. Even my consultant rarely uses the term LADA.

I’d take insulin personally. You must decide for yourself, of course. Personally, I don’t see the benefit of eating a restricted diet when insulin will help preserve your remaining beta cells. As @trophywench says, you can also then get used to it with small doses.

For driving, you inform the DVLA you’re on insulin. You then test your blood sugar before driving. There is guidance about what to do, so don’t worry about that. And yes, even if my blood sugar was fine, I’d often have a few extra carbs for a long journey. I also stop regularly and test.

For a 7 min drive, you’d ensure your blood sugar was high enough to drive and then off you go. The guidance is ‘5 to drive’ but I like to be around 6.5 even for short journeys.

Hi Im eating lo carb diet for 5 days with fringerprick tests . Then i'll introduce higher carbs for 5 days to see what happens. PS Im not sure if LADA is the same as type 1. In that its a mix. So i may have metformin as well as insulin as I am producing some insulin they say

Low carb is only til the hospital appt. Im told that will be soon , but we;ll see. I queried it and think for sure the nurse was saying use lo carb and metformin for now. I'll see if @ David pops up.

Some people with LADA need Metformin as well as insulin, some don’t. If you need it, that’s sensible to take it 🙂
