When we had stew and dumplings, my father insisted on the dumplings being served separately first, with golden syrup (notwithstanding the bits of onion, carrot and gravy adhering to them because they’d cooked on top of the stew) I always assumed this was also a Yorkshire custom, but maybe my father was just weird…When we stayed with our Gran in Lincolnshire we always had Yorkshire Pudding as a dessert, with Golden Syrup. Just looked up Golden Syrup nutrition details online - 80% carb, all of it sugar...!
