There’s a certain beauty with the power of the voices en mass that’s for sure. And he also wrote for huge orchestras so that means the singers have to have Power.Morning all, 6.4 here. Very entertaining plot summary, @ColinUK . I only know the overture, I think my father had it on an old 78. (or several. If you wanted the whole opera on 78s, you’d have to build an extension to store them). I’ve never really got into Wagner, I think I'm put off by the heavyweight voices needed to sing them and be heard above the orchestra.
There’s also a signature haunting quality to the brass section in the things I’ve seen of his so far. It really is quite remarkable work even if it’s a bit “Germanic”.
There are times I can’t help but hear strains of “Tomorrow Belongs To Me” but I try and divorce the music from the man.
Next Wagner is Rheingold in a few weeks at the ENO and that’s got assorted deities, magic mountain dwelling dwarves and heaps of gold so I’m expecting that to be an utterly sensible plot with no deaths or misery at all.
