Feeling scared

I have never had a hairdresser who has tried to sell me products.
I would certainly find another one if they tried.

I wouldn't bother telling them - I would just not book any more appointments with them.

I tend to change hairdresser every few years anyway - I get bored with the same style but need someone (a hairdresser) to be creative and come up with something new.
In my experience, they seem to have a "bell curve of creativity". At the start they are getting to know me and don't want to push me too far. Over time, they realise I am open to bigger changes. They then seem to run out of ideas and stick with what they did last time.

Sorry, the reason for me changing hairdressers is irrelevant.
But @corriefan you don't need to explain - just go elsewhere if you are not happy with your hairdresser whether it because they are trying to sell you stuff or whether you don't like the way they cut your hair.

Well sometimes people may be upset by things that you say or do. However, your happiness is more important: you can't spend your life avoiding upsetting people whilst making yourself miserable.

True they have been doing scalp bleach on my hair but my new hairdresser refused as they say full highlights is healthier and gives a better blonde colour x

I'm afraid I have no idea what all that means. You'd definitely upset me if you tried to put bleach on my head 😱

I can be a people pleaser. Last time I went to the hairdressers it was in my village but one I hadn't used before. The one I had been using which is a family one was closed for holidays and I wanted my hair cut. I think the owner did my hair she was interesting and I liked the cut. She asked if I wanted any products and 90% of the time I say no. I decided as a change to have conditioner for the first time for years. I tend to say no as I don't want the hard sell. If your hair looks exceptionally gorgeous afterwards or when you comb it at home it feels good you could always go back and ask what products they used and the price so you can consider at your leisure. Unless you have particular needs I think products are a rip off. I almost always refuse hair spray. Why not ask friends what they use? You could always ask your hairdresser the state of your hair eg fine thick curly. Ask how best to deal with it at home but refuse products. You can always look for similar products in a chemist or Amazon or having thought it through go back and buy from the hairdresser but ask for discount as your are a good customer.

I realise having read further you have had highlights. I had a friend who had her hair coloured and went e very 6 weeks. I have in the past had highlights and my hair looked good but my purse was empty! I am now retired and living with grey hair. Some of my friends have their hair coloured but I am reluctant to commit to that. I agree if your hair is coloured you need to make sure it is kept in good condition. Your new hairdresser seems a keeper. Ask for her opinions and advice but don't buy on the day. They won't refuse to sell it to you another day.

Thank you so much for replying my old hairdresser said my hair has been fragile since I've had diabetes xx

And being bleached at the scalp certainly won't have helped! Any decent hairdresser would suggest holding off on bleach or permanent colour until your hair was in better condition.
You can always put a temporary colour in while your hair recovers. Mine has only recently improved after months of being flyaway and dry and full of static.

I believe (although I don't remember where I heard it) that hair is more static and fly away in dry weather.
My hair is very staticky on cold dry days. If I attempt to flatten my hair with my hand it will stick to the hand like a vandergraph. It used to be one of my party tricks with balloons.
I guess that's one positive from these grey wet days we have been having - my hair is easy to control.

Thank you yes true your right xx
I worked in a hairdresser as a Saturday job when I was a teenager and somebody came in asking if we could do something with her hair as she had stupidly used household bleach, it was quite long and had basically turned to straw and her scalp was raw, there was nothing much that could be done other than cut most of it off and slap loads of conditioner on. How stupid can people be.
