Feeling scared

Must confess I am avoiding making an appointment to see my dentist. I have the remnants of a tooth that was crowned many years ago, got infected last summer and needed anti bs and I was supposed to go back and get it out because the root is compromised but I really can't face an extraction and I have lost a bit of confidence in my dentist the last few years, even though I have been with her for over 20 years. In the meantime, the very back tooth on the other side has broken and is tender when I chew on it, suggesting that too is going to need to come out. One extraction was bad enough to contemplate but one on each side is worse still. Added to that, I think I would like implants as I am getting low on chewing surfaces with both back teeth broken down, but I need to save up if I want those, so I am avoiding going for a check up because I will feel pushed into making a decision that I am not ready to make. I am OK with fillings and crowns etc, it is extractions that I am queasy about..... so I am procrastinating and ignoring the email requesting me to ring up and make an appointment for a check up..... which is even more stupid because I am a private patient, so I am paying monthly and not getting the service and all because I am a wimp! It isn't pain I am worried about, it is the unpleasantness and thought of having a tooth pulled.

Anyway, just wanted to say that I totally sympathise and you are not the only one who is scared!
Hi there, sorry to hear about your teeth extraction. I am in the same situation now, wanna know how it went with you and what decision you made. I was only diagnosed type 2 4weeks ago and now went to dentist and one of my tooth that I had root canal very long time ago had formed a puss underneath and infected and it can't be saved and hence need removing. I was given an option to get it removed privately or thru NHS which has 1.5 year waiting list. With private as well they had given 2 options one is advanced clean and removal costing £280 and another for £180 basic clean and extraction. She mentioned, while removing it might break into 3 pieces and chances of one of them remaining until the body pulls out on its own or may need to remove at a later stage.... I am now so scared as to what I have to do?? I did have root canal for 2 other tooth on the other side but being diabetic and going thru extraction is scary.... wanna know ur experience and what decision u made and how did it go with you??

Oh Gosh! Now you have asked I am going to have to admit that I am still being a total wimp and ignoring the problem. Mine had root canal work a lont time ago and was crowned so at least I don't have nerves in that tooth. I was given a private prescription for antiBs I think mostly as a precaution because I was going abroad for a few days. It was sore and bled regularly when I cleaned it for several months afterwards and if I try to chew on it, it isn't very comfortable. Unfortunately the back lower tooth on the other side is going the same way, so I am now facing the prospect of two extractions, but afraid apart from cleaning them really thoroughly which can be painful, I am continuing to bury my head in the sand. I am now pretty confident that it is no longer infected (no pain or throbbing or anything) but I can't really chew much on it or the other side, so probably putting a greater strain on my other teeth. Just want to say that I am not at all encouraging you to ignore the situation. I am a private patient and my dentist offered to take it out there and then but I was going abroad a couple of days later and didn't want to cope with the extraction when I was already anxious about going away.
I am disappointed in myself that I am setting such a bad example but I am really just not in the right mental state to deal with it. I haven't been back to the dentists since Sept and I am now getting regular reminders that I am overdue for a check up. I am on a payment plan so I really need to pull on my big girl's pants and face the music as otherwise I am paying monthly for nothing!

being diabetic and going thru extraction is scary
I had an extraction after one of my crowns came loose for the 3rd time and my dentist decided it was a lost cause. However, because what was left of the tooth was perilously close to my sinus he felt it was best taken out by a dental surgeon. As my dental plan didn't cover it I went private and had to fork out £300, but the extraction was painless and all I had to do was stick to soft foods for a week.
