What are you reading?

I have read all Elly Griffiths' novels over the past year. I finished The Last Word yesterday which appears to be the final book in that series. My favourite series by Elly is The Ruth Galloway Mysteries. Her Brighton Mysteries are also very good. Today I have started to read Cecelia Ahern's The Book of Tomorrow. A total change of pace and, as yet, I am not sure if it is for me.

Finished Career of Evil, was a bit of a struggle to do.
Now started The Heron's Cry, by Ann Cleeves.

Just finished Maggie O’Farrell ‘s Portrait of a marriage
Excellent book and ended up finishing it at 2:30 in the morning as I got hooked.

I’ve just finished a wonderful book. The Music Shop by Rachel Joyce, author of The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. In the late 80s Frank runs a record shop, which only sells vinyl, he refuses to sell CDs or cassettes much to the reps chagrin. He has an uncanny knack of being able to chose a record for everyone who walks into his shop. It’s a beautifully written book and very descriptive, the way Frank describes the music is amazing. I could actually hear the music as I read it. It’s a story of friendship, kindness, community, love but also sadness. The story continues right into the 21st century. I must admit I struggled to read the final pages as I had ( lots of) tears in my eyes. If you want something gentle and poignant, and you enjoyed Harold Fry whether the book or the film, then this is for you. There’s even a link to a podcast with all the music that’s mentioned, but that’s far too complex for me!

A bit self indulgent am reading an old diary of my from 2008 covering the time i was in hospital on my first section God its sad you can see how ill I was and why I was in under section. Have got diarys going back to 1982

Finished The Heron's Cry, enjoyed it.
Now starting What She Said by D.S Butler.

Let’s dive in despite my Stroke stuff I am an avid reader although a lot slower than I used to be. Controversial but I won’t allow myself to read fiction. My life issues have really encouraged me to learn.
So I’m currently reading Sapiens: A Brief History of Mankind by Yuval Noah Harari As it suggests really quite mind blowing it’s incredible to think what a short time we have lived on this planet. Earth approx 4 billion years old humans 200,000 years. Quite a story .

Looking forward to Homo Deus. What happens next. A.i. , Eternal life ? Evolving into a different life form ? Sounds like Sci-Fi but are scholarly works.
I tend to read on my kindle App and occasionally lay down and listen to a book on Audible.

Finished What She Said, partly guessed the ending.
Now reading The Last Party, by Claire Mackintosh.

Finished the Last Party, it had a bit of a twist. Not sure I liked the style of the writing.
Now starting TheDying Light by Joy Ellis.

Just finished Maggie O’Farrell ‘s Portrait of a marriage

one of my favourites that I read recently! Definitely recommend checking out her other books if you haven't already 🙂 Hamnet is incredible

Decided it was about time me to read Little Women. At first found it a bit too preachy, and didn't understand the popularity of the novel. However the more I read, the more I liked it.
Moral, don't give up on books so quickly.

Maggie O' Farrell's books IMO are never disappointing 🙂

Now starting TheDying Light by Joy Ellis.
I just finished that too! I saw a review of it on instagram about it having some crazy twists- and it was okay, but not as mindblowing as I hoped it would be. The characters were interesting so I would give it a 6.5/10

I read it every year and each time I find something new. This year, I am fascinated by the emphasis on furniture. I also read Turn of the Screw annually.

Happy reading
I've actually never read Middlemarch, but you've sold it to me. I recently re-read Austen's Persuasion for the 100th time and loved it (as always) 🙂

my old diarys from when i was 18 and full of hope, i seem to have gone out a lot and got drunk 😱 i have kept a diary for 45 years now
that seems like a lot of fun! I only kept a diary from the ages of around 8-12 sadly- I'm sure they would be a hoot to read if I can find them...probably in the loft somewhere haha

I agree the characters were intresting, but I am not keen on books that keep jumping time, like this one did, though not as bad as some.

Need to find a new read and am leaning towards "Knife" by Salman Rushdie. Have had a bit of a history with this author after having to give up on the amazingly sounding premis of "Midnights Children" because it was so impenetrably hard going. His other books likewise.
Originally thought I'd go with "Magic Pill" by Johann Hari about these new weight loss pills for dieting.
We'll see!

Finished the Dying Light, I was not suprised by ending twist, but it was quite a dark book.
Now started Dougnuts and Decpetion the 3fd in the Cozy cafe mysteries by Agatha Frost.

I’m having a slow reading week. Don’t know whether it’s because I’m having busy days and can’t stay awake for long to read, or it’s the book. I’m reading A Maiden’s Grave by Jeffrey Deaver, an author I really like but this is almost 30 years old and it hasn’t aged well. There’s a hostage situation and it started quite slow, it’s seems strange that the technology is so old fashioned but it’s not that. It’s just so non PC, especially towards the females, it’s very misogynistic, it’s actually making me cringe at times. There’s also a touch of racism, using the N word which shocked me,( it’s set in Kansas), the premise is good and I will finish it but I think I’ll be steering clear of 30 year old American crime novels from now on. How our attitudes have changed, thank goodness, over the years.
