Are you living with Type 2 Diabetes, in the UK, and interested in taking part in a short research study?

My name is Lily Jeffery, I am a post-graduate student at Manchester Metropolitan University, completing a MSc in Human Nutrition. I would like to invite you to take part in a short survey exploring the experiences of patients living with Type 2 Diabetes in the UK, for my dissertation project. This builds on my undergraduate research where I worked with Professor Roy Taylor (DiRECT Study in Newcastle) looking at the remission results achievable, outside of the clinical study.

The effect of weight loss on Type 2 Diabetes management is an emerging research area, challenging the long-established view of the disease being life-long. My study aims to investigate the attitudes of patients (both men and women) regarding weight loss as an approach to improve disease symptoms, and the barriers they face in successfully implementing these lifestyle changes. In doing so, I hope to provide deeper insight to guide future research, for improved treatment.

I’d be really grateful for your participation to support my research, to do so, the questionnaire consists of both tick-box, simple rating scales and optional short written responses, which I estimate will take you less than 15 minutes. If you agree to take part and complete the questionnaire, then you can submit, that is all that is needed. Consent will be given through submission of the completed form.

I have attached the participant information sheet, which includes more details on the study.

If you have any questions please email me at lily.jeffery@stu.mmu.ac.uk.

Thank you!

Ok sorted.

I think there may be an error on section 3 Part D. 'Food and vedge' should possibly be 'Fruit and vedge'.

Quite comprehensive but (as far as I can remember now) ...

No mention of using online Apps to assist in food/meal selection
No detailed questions about BG testing
No mention of where the best/worst information and help was obtained.
No mention of how DB may have actually improved ones life
No mention of how initial diagnosis was made or informed to the 'patient'
No mention of initial reactions. ie panic and how the 'patient' has coped
No mention on whether the GP or DN are open to alternative strategies
No mention about the 'patients' worst/best experiences since diagnosis

I'd also add, no option for 'none' on dietary requirements, given it's an optional question will mean you don't know if people eat everything or dont want to answer the question. Same for the complications question.... seem unusual omissions. Given it's a weight loss study i'd have though seperating injections into insulin and other injections such as weight loss targetted injections, would be useful to the results also.

indeed. Completed. Per others - n/a would be a good option to add for some of those questions.

I knew I'd forget something... some of the questions do need a 'none' or 'n/a' option

I noticed that one of the questions about length of time would be puzzling for those wishing to answer '4' as it was '1 - 4' and then '4 - 8' rather than '5 - 8'.

Like most things in life the survey is a good start and can be improved.

Its one of the things I loved about being an internal auditor. Finding the problems, advising of a solution or an improved process and then driving it all through to completion. Nothing was ever perfect and all could be improved. In the end it always came down to cost, risk, time, and resources.

That App I wrote to help me manage my diabetes still isn't finished! I improve it every day. So that's about six months of development since I first 'finished' it. Mind you I do use it as a distraction from utter boredom. Not sure what I will do when it is really finished.

I just hope that the researcher here will take note of the feedback here.

And it would be nice to hear from the researcher too in regard to the given feedback.

Thank you for your feedback and participation! It is really appreciated. I will certainly take your suggestions on board, within the scope of the project and what is possible now the survey is live.

If you would like to provide further information on subjects not already in the survey, please do add them to the "Further comments" box at the end of the questionnaire, or there's an opportunity to give your contact details to arrange a follow-up interview.

Thanks again, Lily 🙂

Lily - at the time when Warwick Uni did 'A Lot' of Diabetes research - they also had a Diabetes User Group - when a gang of us used to meet at the Uni monthly and the researchers would present their chosen research Qnrs to us to 'pick flies with' before they went live - and believe me - we could usually find flies! It does honestly save time and effort, and proved very useful to them.

We were sworn to secrecy - so had to be 'interviewed' by almost the whole group before even being allowed to join them!
