Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
However, now is the time that I have to start minding!

Hello from London...I'm Sarah, not so newly diagnosed Type 2 (was diagnosed in June 2015) but being brutally honest only just starting to try and get my head around everything now, I think I've been in denial a bit.

I've been trying to get information from lots of places, read the Diabetes for Dummies book, parts of the Type 2 Diabetes book by Dr Charles Fox and Dr Anne Kilvert and the 100 things I wish I'd know book...which is published by this site.

I've attended the DESMOND course back in October - which I found 50% helpful and 50% not so helpful...and my GP has put me on Forxiga (Dapagliflozin) as I couldn't tolerate Metformin even in slow release form.

I know all the things I should be doing...I'm struggling in my head to get myself motivated and I don't know why, that makes me feel even more frustrated with myself, which seems to then put me in a circle of feeling bleurgh.

Anyway, reading many posts on here and reading other people's threads has given me a medium sized kick up the behind to hopefully start afresh and give myself a new start.

So, even when you type stuff to other people on here, you're helping many others who haven't become members yet - Thanks!

I look forward to some posts, and maybe a bit of banter on here in the future...and maybe I'll be heading towards the Nirvana bit soon and leaving the Nevermind behind me!

Welcome to the forum Sarah74. Feel free to ask and answer any questions.

Thanks Copepod - am having a look around the forum...have just ordered the book by Gretchen Becker that I've seen a few people talking about.

I'm sure I'll have lots of questions! Not sure I could answer any yet though... 😱

Hi Sarah, welcome to the forum 🙂 I'd suggest having a browse of our Useful Links thread to find some resources our members have found, erm, useful! :D Let us help you on your journey to enlightenment! 🙂

Welcome, Sarah! You've done the right thing by coming here, it's a wonderful source of info and encouragement. My local DESMOND course was a bit iffy too, and this site is so much better. As Kurt also said, 'Come as you are...' 😉

Hi and welcome to the forum Sarah. This is a great place for information. Lots of very experienced folks around at all times of day and night.

I am only 2 months into my journey and find this place invaluable for answers to many questions.:D

Thanks Pine Marten and Lynn!

Kurt was very wise Pine Marten 😉

At the moment I just wish my head would catch up with what it knows I should be doing.
I'm beginning to see just how friendly people are on here Lynn!

Welcome Sarah, glad you found us. Perhaps you might join in one of the meetings we have arranged across the country through the year for forum members and their tagalongs. They're always fun and it's nice to put names to faces.

Helluva big thing to get your head round though, isn't it ? So - very much like the method of eating a whole elephant - obviously - nobody could ever do that! So - divide it into bite sized pieces - that way you'll get there bit by bit apparently. I must admit even though it sounds sensible advice - and it is all protein and fat so shouldn't increase my BG - I know my freezer is nowhere near large enough and I also know I'd get sick of eating it and want a change. Then of course I realise that I HAVE to continue to eat it (and probably all the rest of the herd by the time I'm finished) - so it really does all boil down to dividing it into small enough pieces to keep me interested enough to continue.

A less complex way of looking at it is to say when you walk uphill - you actually get there quicker and a lot less worn out - merely by taking smaller steps and carrying on - at your OWN pace !

You'll get there.

Hi Sarah.🙂 Welcome to the forum.

Hi Sarah and welcome to the forum. I don't think I could have got through the past 6 months since diagnosis without the help and advice on here.

Welome. The people on here are so knowledgeable and helpful and they don't just work 9 - 5🙂

Thanks Alison, sounds like the meetings are a good idea for people, I saw there are a few in London later in the year.

Hi Mark! and Trophywench - I like the elephant analogy - maybe it will become tastier with a side salad for me 😉 I hope today will be the start of my one step at a time...

Thanks Stitch - so far it does seem like I have come to the right place!
My partner came home from work tonight, and I told him I felt a lot more motivated - so fingers crossed and small steps is the way to go.

I'm the kind of person that needs to follow a plan...so will be thinking a lot this weekend.

Cheers all.

Thanks Susan! That's handy as I'm usually up for work myself at 5am 😉
On a serious note, I think it's going to be good getting to know other people who are in the same boat!
I don't know of anyone myself...

Hi Sarah - welcome to the forum. Like the opening post. 🙂 Go on then, I'll shoehorn a Nirvana track in - as you say new start, keep working at it and you'll soon be in bloom.

Well done Matt! I'm suitably impressed with the Nirvana knowledge in these 'ere parts.
Thanks for the welcome.

Welcome Sarah, I'm sure you'll feel at home here, I'd shoe horn a Nirvana track if I could think of one but I'm c**p at song titles 🙄

If you go along to any courses or meetings there's no rules just come as you are.
I know that's bad just wanted to get another Nirvana track in! Used to be a bit of a fan when I was in college. Even used to wear black tights, stripey socks, dm boots, cut down denim shorts, t shirt, with a checked shirt over the top. The grunge look!

Don't forget what the Pistols said because there's a lot of that talked about D in the media.
