I haven’t ridden a drop bar bike for years, but I have a theory that straights are an unnatural position for our arms/wrists whereas drops on the hoods or the drop are parallel to your body. Just look how your arms swing when you walk, yet straight bars switch thru thru 90°. Try walking like that.
I have found that my wrist ache earlier and earlier on straights as I get older. Just a few miles now.
