lol, I find I'm always in a hurry these days - I need to slow down and enjoy the ride more. I think the fact that I've mainly been riding to work or to reduce BG (so trying to fit an energetic ride into a small window) this year has probably caused me to do this. Bring on some pleasant weather and I will try to revert to nice slow(er) long rides 🙂It’s a balance. Personally, I tend to go flat out when I’m on my own but my wife is introducing me to the slippery slope of *gulp* coffee stops! Also, taking time to “enjoy the ride”. She just doesn’t understand the enjoyment starts when the pain stops! Or is that just me? 🙂
This year I planned better - I did the same transfers and only the 50km Sportive and stopped for beer + chips at half way, then headed back (for a 100 miles, without a lift this time). I'm not sure beer at 50 miles helped with the hills in Bath on the way back mind you, but it was all fine 🙂Hmmm…sounds like biting off more than anyone could reasonably chew!
I take some emergency snacks (including Kendal mintcake which is palatable when feeling icky if you've really overdone it) and now understand that hypos while riding are generally unlike normal ones (where you really need to fix it ASAP as there's usually too much IoB so BG will keep going down no matter what unless you eat), my riding hypos tend to stop when I stop and also any massive drops I see in progress on the CGM can be slowed down if I just start pedalling more gently. This doesn't solve the problem of getting home if you do have to stop (or eliminate the other problem of then getting cold/wet while stopped) but does at least mean there's time to consider the situation, which in the absence of food on the bike is always to keep pedalling slowly towards food, little point in standing around getting cold while feeling confused about what to do (in the dark on a Sunday night, with a BG of 3.5mmol/l and 10km and some hills to go, not that I've done that before, recently at least).I know, I know…just need to stop prevaricating. Re T1D, if low eat, if high pedal harder - that’s how I’m trying to think of it.
Sounds good, even if we start with something shorter which might have wider appeal too.I’d be happy to travel and meet at a convenient spot. Yes, work provides some challenges but should be able to get a weekend pass. No rush and no stress, I’m sure we can work something out in the fullness of time. 🙂
