i just had to share this - 6 months ago on diagnosis my hba1c was 73. Just had it redone and it’s 40! I’m utterly gobsmacked to say the least! So all that hard work and change has reaped rewards. And all without the dreaded Metformin.
I’ve lost just shy of 2 stone in weight as well and can honestly say I’ve never felt better.
When I started to read up on Diabetes I couldn’t quite believe that I couldn’t eat cornflakes for breakfast but could pig out on bacon, eggs and sausages if I wanted. But I haven’t, instead opting for wholemeal toast with no marmalade.
I realise I still have to be careful but will carry on testing as I have been doing to keep an eye on things.
I might just celebrate with a bar of chocolate - only a small one though!

Well well done Flakie. I have two of my good friends off there T2 Meds. It is possible to have an effect ? 😉

Thank you. The DN started me off on Metformin and the SR version but I stopped them and now take Alogliptin.

Very well done

She might reduce them too in time.

Congratulations... It can be a hard journey but the rewards are worth it....

@Flakie Fabulous and well done.

Thank you all. Now that Ive come down off cloud nine I realise this doesn’t mean I’ve got rid of it and still have to be careful. My waking levels are averaging about 6 so presumably if I keep it about this and still test after unknown food I should be ok? How have others approached this? I’d be interested to know and learn.

Well done Flakie! That’s an amazing result!

Great results, @Flakie, well done! :D

Brilliant result flakie and I hope you take enormous pleasure in telling that rather unpleasant nurse! :D

Excellent work, flakie, you must be proud, as we are proud of you.🙂

Now go and smug that nurse to death. (Is smug a verb?)?🙂

Test as you say - always before and after 'unfamiliar' foods but also at some other times even when the meal is familiar and you think you know - we often find ourselves getting what we call 'carb creep'.

You know, eg chilli for tea with which we have boiled rice, but I can only cope with X amount of rice so I only have two serving spoonfuls. Occasionally it get more than two rounded spoons of it and without deliberately realising - I may have heaped ones instead. Or maybe a small satsuma was fine last Thursday - but today it isn't. Perhaps these are sweeter or a tad larger?

Thank you all. Yes, I’m rather hoping I get a follow up with the nurse after all the fuss she made! Thanks Jenny for the reassurance also. There’s no chance of me going back to bad habits as I know I feel so much better these days so testing is the way to go. I am also going to start going to my local support group as I haven’t been able to up till now and that will help I think.

A massive WELL DONE, Flakie. 😛:D😛 That’s an all-round brilliant result.🙂

Brilliant!! Well done Flakie. I've been testing twice a day, fasting and two hours after my main meal. While not strictly carb counting, I have been very aware of what I can eat. I started this regime on the twentieth of January after getting extra test strips as I used to only test on a Saturday morning. I have an appointment with my DN on 8th May and want to get the HbA1c down to the low forties, (from sixty nine). I've lost a stone and my average fasting BG is around 7.5, and after meals around 6.5. It's reading success stories like yours that gives me hope, yes it's a long hard slog, but I feel better for it already.
Keep up the good work, and best of luck in the future.

Thanks Chappy
I’ve surprised myself as to how quickly I adapted to the new regime to be honest though it wasn’t easy over Christmas seeing all,the goodies in the house and the Christmas cake I had made! I did have a little and a few treats but funnily enough I’ve lost the urge to feast on the bad things as I feel so much more healthy in myself and now realise that eating what I though was healthy stuff like cereal and pasta was actually messing my system up big time. I used to get upset tummy and feel queasy a lot but now that’s very rare and only if I’ve over indulged on the bad stuff. I’ve looked for things I can use as substitutes to satisfy my snacking cravings so I don’t feel too deprived but find it easy to say no to desserts and so on because I know I’m benefiting from it. My weight loss is also very satisfying and lovely when people notice as well! Keep up the good work and well done on your own success - we can do this!

Congratulations 🙂 You're doing a great job.
