Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello. I was officially told I was type 2 diabetic today.

I was initially told that I was "pre-diabetic", or had Impaired fasting Glucose levels. But they performed a fructosamine test and that came back with levels of 48-58 apparently.

My hba1c tests don't work for me or give an accurate reading, due to anaemia/problems with haemoglobin, so it looks like I'll be relying on the fructosamine? tests to get an accurate reading. The nurse said that the hba1c test only showed me as 38 - which is normal. But the other tests showed otherwise.

I'm wondering if anyone else has the same problem with the hba1c not giving an accurate reading?

Hi @deej . Welcome to the forum. As you have problems with Anaemia they should do the frucosamine test instead of the Hb1ac. And yes we do have a few people who need this test.
I'm sorry I know nothing about the levels of this test , others here will though

You probably have a lot of questions, feel free to ask, we'll do our best to help.
If you head over to the ' Useful links for people new to diabetes' thread . For future reference it's on the pinned section of 'Newbies say hello here' forum, scroll down to the T2 section

Other will be along soon.

Welcome from a fellow T2.

Welcome, not heard about that test before, but hopefully you will find out huge amounts from the good folk on here.

It was a fructosamine test in medical research which alerted my GP to do hba1c when I was then told I was pre-diabetic with a reading of 42 rising to 43 after three months.

I read that thalassaemia and sickle cell anaemia causes falsely low hba1c as does blood loss but iron deficiency anaemia can cause falsely high hba1c but GP or haematologist would know more than I do.

Hello deej and welcome to the forum. 🙂
