Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hi all I'm type 2 on 1 tablet a day really struggling to find foods that's right I'm scared I sat crying today sounds daft but how do I no what's what it's all to much information at once

Welcome @Don75 A diabetes diagnosis is a shock so it’s ok to be upset and stressed by it. Don’t worry though, you’ll get the hang of things gradually.

What tablet are you taking?

You could look at the Learning Zone (orange tab at the top of this page) and also this information for Type 2s:

If you give us an idea of what you ate pre-diagnosis, we can suggest tweaks and substitutions. Most Type 2s find they have to watch the carbs they eat (not only sugar, things like bread, pasta, potatoes, rice, etc).

Do you know what your HbA1C was (the test used to diagnose you as having diabetes)? That will give an idea of how much you might need to change your diet? Generally, you’re looking at reducing carbs. If you want suggestions for specific meals, just ask, but do tell us the name of your tablet first as that might affect the advice you’re given.

Welcome to the forum @Don75

It doesn’t sound daft at all! A diagnosis with diabetes can be overwhelming, and it’s perfectly natural to feel knocked sideways - so be kind to yourself, and give yourself time to adjust and adapt.

When it come to food, there‘s a handy downloadable guide here which gives a helpful overview

The element of your diet that has the most significant impact on your blood glucose levels is carbohydrate (starches and sugars). Many forum members find that reducing portion sizes of carbohydrates, alongside reducing sweet and sugary things, is a very effective strategy.

Others find that aiming for weight loss by keeping an eye on calories can help the body handle food more effectively by reducing insulin resistance, and clearing visceral fat around the liver and pancreas.

One thing to remember is that there’s no one single approach that works for everyone, so you have to find a system and way of eating that suits your metabolism, and that you can enjoy and maintain. There are some ideas of different strategies here:

Good luck, and let us know how you get on!

I’d ignore them, if maltwheats are a better breakfast than you had previously then it’s a step in the right direction, even if it turns out in the end that it’s not the final choice of ideal breakfasts.

Is that this forum or a group on Facebook or somewhere else? I wouldn’t join any type 2 diabetes groups on Facebook, always found them full of either low carb evangelists or clueless newbies being insulted and upset by over evangelistic other members. Here is a bit more balanced, though still always consider other people’s comments as just suggestions, and find what works for you.

What a horrible situation to be in it cannot be easy when you have to think about your sons as well as taking care of yourself.
Slimming World can work for people but make sure you tell your group leader you are Type 2 diabetic and there are specific plans to accommodate low carb options. Some of the SW meals can be a bit carb heavy.
Cooking yourself if you have the facilities is better than pre-prepared meals though by careful selection of those and bulking out with plenty veg or salad they can be fine.
The metformin you are taking gives the body a helping hand in being able to use the insulin you are producing more effectively and preventing the liver from releasing glucose but the most important thing you can do is make some dietary changes.
This link may give you some meal ideas which may help you make some changes. https://lowcarbfreshwell.co.uk/
