Relationship to Diabetes

Hi everyone, doc told me yesterday i have diabetes,so,after the initial shock it's time to do something about it,ive gotta drop 2-3 stone for a start, low carb diet or whatever you think might help,i'm open to suggestion,im awaiting appointment for diabetics group and diet specialist but want to get cracking as soon as poss, what do you think?

Hi Pomcat and welcome to the forum. Some people do the low carb high fat way of eating, but you have to find what works for you and what you can sustain for the long term. I personally dont do very low carb as I know that I would struggle to stick to it.

Hi stitch 147,to be honest i dont know too much about low/high carb diets but nows the time to learn for me,i'm still very much in the learning stage about diabetes and that's really why iv joined this forum,to read and learn from other people's experiences and of course ask any questions,oh,and thank you for your response.

This is a great place for help and advice, I am 18 months past diagnosis and still learning. You will get lots of different opinions about the best way to tackle things, but you will have to find what works best for you, there is no one size fits all when it comes to diabetes. I lost 7 stone prior to diagnosis following weight watchers, but I know I have to lose a bit more, which is what Im just starting to tackle.

Welcome to the fouum, you have come to the right place.

Quick guide to cutting carbs:
Severely restrict potatoes, rice, pasta and bread.
Increase good protein, chicken, eggs, tofu etc.

Limit fruit to berries and test to see how you tolerate.
Wine is fine!!!!

Ignore health food traffic light system on front of packaging about sugar. It's total carbs on rear you need to note as all carbs turn to sugar in your body.

Testing. If you haven't been given a meter buy one. A codefree one on Amazon is cheapest for meter and strips. You test before and 2 hours after food. You are looking for ideal readings of 4-6 before food and under 8.5 two hours after food. These are ideal, in the early days your target might just be to get into single figures. Note food that spike you i.e. if you are 5 before food and go to 9 after food work out which food is causing the spike.

Welcome from a fellow T2

I've just put this on another newbies thread but its relevant, My GP insisted i start on a low carb, high protein diet. The practice dietitian & diabetic nurse both agreed and to be honest i feel so much better for doing it. I've lost 2.5 stones in weight, my BG levels are coming down quickly, my cholesterol is now controlled. I'm continuing my fairly strict diet as i'm feeling the benefits at the moment. I probably need more exercise but i'm starting to address that also. Good luck with it, stay focussed, listen to the wonderful advice of people on here that are living with T2 every day of their lives and use that exxperience. All the best.

Well written, Grogg. Everything you need to know in one tidy package.🙂

hello everybody, as a 40 year plus type 1 diabetic i have finally joined a forum specific to my condition the reason...a very awful experience with the agamatrixavesense jazz glucose meter that everyone should be aware of, it can literally put your life in danger

(USA) agamatrix wavesense jazz to make sure that is legible....it is the most awful blood glucose machine on the market and unfortunately my GP foisted this on me about a year ago (cost cutting)
