Hi....have just joined......been Type 2 for 20 years approximately.
Seem to have lost my way somewhat and am looking forward to chatting to/getting advice from like minded people.

Welcome Dawn.
You have come to a good place for plenty of help and advice. Sorry to hear that you feel that you have lost your way a bit at present. Can you tell us how you are managing your D at present and if there is any particular area in which you would like advice, and don’t worry no questions are considered silly on here. People just want to help.

Thank you so much for your kind reply SB2014.....much appreciated. I am feeling very low and fed up with it all. Been on Metformin for 20 years now (4x500mg per day). I have tried a day without it and immediately my tummy, feet legs and general feeling of well being is so much better on waking today???? My blood sugars however are all over the place as we speak (16.1) so will have to start again with my lunch. Would love to not have to take anything.

Are you getting good support from GP or diabetes specialist? I'd say that if the nasties have started recently you really should talk to an expert, if you haven't already?

I have decided I need to go and see the Diabetes Nurse next week for a chat. I get seen once a year but how I feel has got worse just lately. I have started walking every day re the exercise side of things. I have read on the Internet that you can end up with too much Metformin in your system and am wondering if this is my problem as not taking any for 24 hours seemed to help how I felt....especially the feet and legs.....also the nausea. That said it does seem a little quick for such results. As my blood taken just now was 16.1.....I have just taken my dose of Metformin!

Glad you're going to see yr DN.

I used to avoid doctors etc like the plague, but since the diabetes diagnosis I now kind of get the point of them ...

I so understand the feeling better without Metformin, but I only lasted five weeks.
How do you normally control your blood glucose - did you celebrate the lack of pills with something - lets us call it unwise?

Exercise is good for the whole body , good luck & welcome 🙂

Hi Dawn

The glucose levels that you are getting will depend on the amount of carbohydrates that you are eating. Do you monitor this at all? I was surprised how much I had in my meals when I was diagnosed. More recently we have set ourselves a lower target for each meal (which is flexible around the edges) and that has helped us both. The news papers etc focus a lot on sugar which tends to distort the view, and then people forget to include all the pasta, potatoes, rice, root vegetables, ... in their counting. We still eat these but in smaller quantities.

You could try just finding out how many carbs you are eating at a meal (I just type into google carbs in .... if I don’t know and it is not on the packet). The bit we avoid completely now is pre-prepared meals. Once you know how many carbs you are eating you could try to reduce this and see what impact it has on your BG.

Good to hear that you are getting out for walks now. One tip Intook on which I found easy to do was not to sit down for 15 minutes after any meal. We walk, or I do some ironing, offer to clear up, ... anything to keep moving so that muscles use up some of the glucose that I have just made by eating.

Hope that helps

Hi again. I know you are not new to diabetes but I am wondering if the advise on here for those newly diagnosed will help you for future reference , you’ll find the following info at the top of the Newbies forum
useful-links-for-people-new-to-diabetes
I suggest you start with
Maggie Davey’s letter .
You might find Test review adjust by Alan S helpful.

When you see your Nurse , be frank with her and tell her how you are feeling as well as those horrible symptoms.
In the mean time please ask us loads of questions so we know how best to try and help you.

Thank you so much for the info above. I have only just, this week, after the Doctors, started calculating Carbs. You are right so much focus is on the sugar we are ingesting forgetting just how much of our diet turns to sugar once in the system. My Doctor has now put me on 1 x Glicazide and cut my Metformin to 2 a day. So far so good......but I am really looking at what I am eating. She also recommended Michael Mosley's book on eating with Diabetes. Have just started reading it so hoping for sound advice. I will defo try your tip of doing something after a meal......my husband will be pleased with the ironing one and the clearing up!!!!! ;-)
The Doctors suggestion re eating, and amongst other advice, was to .... 'eat like your Gran would have dished up'. I get that. When I think back to growing up and the good homemade food my Mother gave us I could quite understand the point she was making. So....here I go, with gusto, changing the eating habits of late and looking to a plant based and virtually carb free diet. It is definitely watch this space. 🙂

Thank you everyone for your replies........UPDATE.....I have been to the Doctor, had blood tests done and am now taking 1 x Glicazide and 2 x Metformin. The Doctor and I had a long and frank chat and the upshot was that I need to alter my diet, look at the carbs I was eating and although I didn't drink a lot of alcohol it was obviously too much for my system, on top of everything else, to cope with. So....this week I have taken a L O N G look at my lifestyle and eating habits and am in the process of adjusting to a virtually carb free diet. The results, already, are noticeable. I have no bloating, my feet feel much better and my general well being and mood has improved. The only way is up now which is making me feel so much more positive. I think for a long time I have been in denial regarding food and drink and am glad I have now realised this. I also think this recent down-turn has been my wake up call. Thanks guys for all your support and suggestions.....it has certainly been a help and has been appreciated. Ps........ SB2015.....just sat down from doing the ironing after my meal!!!!!!!
