Hi everyone.
Ive got this week off work and its so lovely to be able to stroll around the fields with my dog.Usually she gets a very rushed walk..sometimes in the dark.Bless her.
This is the only exercise I do I must admit. as there aren't enough hours in the day and I hate exercise!.When the nurse was assessing me on my last visit...she was asking lots of questions about my lifestyle and how active I am.Then after typing it all into the computer she said 'oh that's not too bad...you got moderate'. I was thinking ooo that's good. Then she said 'oh hang on, moderately inactive'. Tut!! 🙄

You'll have to try and fit in something that you can do whilst doing something else 🙂 Like maybe an exercise bike for when you are watching your favourite telly? Something I've found very good for those times when I just want to 'get it over with quickly' is a rowing machine - 5-10 minutes on one of those and you've had enough and I bet it would push you right up the nurse's table! 🙂

A rowing machine might be good for me...exercise bike sounds a bit boring.I did tell the nurse I was about to take up cycling.. but have yet to get a bike.I always have good intentions but it takes me ages to actually get round to doing them!😱

I wonder if an exercise bike could be hooked up to a generator to power the TV and save yourself a bit of money? 😉

Haha!! Don't give my husband ideas like that Robert...hed have me cycling away all evening!!

How about a balance board and a hula hoop? If you're like me you'd get more exercise laughing than actually doing the hula.

Now that's more like it Alison..what a good idea.Il have to move everything out the way first..ive got the grace of an elephant. I do like a laugh though :D

If you don't like exercise, I think the trick is to find something that is 'exercise' but there's enough going on to distract you from the fact you're exercising.

Team sports are a good mainstay, although I appreciate they're not for everyone. But there's plenty of other things out there too. Without wanting to sound like one of those posters you see in a GP's surgery, there's things like dancing classes or bike rides or gardening or housework that all involve burning off calories but won't necessarily feel like 'exercise'.

What other activities fill your days, Fluffy Jo?

Is there any way you could eg
replace using lifts with using stairs?
walk or cycle instead of driving / being passenger in car or bus or train?

Anyway, enjoy this week of longer dog walks each day. Perhaps explore some slightly longer routes that you could use on other days.

As others have said, the key is to find something you enjoy doing - and do it more 🙂

Personally, I can't be doing with team sports, but love things like swimming, walking, cycling (usually commuting around 3 to 5 miles each journey), running, orienteering, geocaching etc, whether alone, with human friends, with friends' dogs etc.

Deus that's exactly what I need to do..things that are active but don't feel like exercise.I do the usual day to day stuff like housework and gardening etc.Dancing might be an idea though.Thank you 🙂

Copepod I work full time so my days mostly filled with that.I do take the stairs rather than the lift and I park further away from the building than I need to (unless its raining).I don't always move about once im at work so im aware that I need to do more.Im not as brave as you..Orienteering? Il leave that one for you :D

OK - you probably know the expression "there's no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothing" - with a waterproof, rain won't make any difference.

As long as you find some activity you enjoy, you'll do it - doesn't have to be what I or anyone else enjoys. You are already helping yourself by using stairs not lift etc.

I use an exercise bike too. 🙂 Pain, mind, carrying round the streets. 😡

Thanks Mark
I especially like the one about putting M&M's between my toes as an incentive to do sit ups, that would work for me 🙂

That's the spirit, fluffyJo!:D

Fluffy Jo, if you've got a lawn, how about one of these? :D

Oh My Goodness Northerner, it's a good job my husband doesn't read this site, he'd immediately be asking where he could buy one for me 😱 :D

And an exercise bike wired to the TV to power it!

Hi Fluffy Jo

I've got CFS and can't walk very far without needing to sit down due to hip and back pain. Until January for a year my only exercise was walking Susie with my OH on Saturdays and Sundays because I was too tired to go out with them when they go early on week day mornings. I also tend to not go out much by myself if OH is at work. But bit by bit I've started doing more dog walking and since January 1 st I've been on a Susie walk everyday albeit needing to sit on a bench half way round. Anyway to get a long story short in order to motivate myself without overdoing it with the CFS I bought a pedometer two weeks ago and I'm using that to challenge myself. It's great seeing the steps build up🙂 I was averaging 2500 steps a day during the week and now I'm aiming for 4000 each day. Seeing the steps mount up on the pedometer gives me the incentive to walk that bit further even if it's only from room to room or circuits round the garden. Would a pedometer help your motivation?

Northerner...I agree with Sally...so glad my husband doesn't see this!:D

AJ you are in inspiration and I do admire your determination.I need some of that.
The pedometer is a great idea.Funnily enough I was looking at them the other day as my sister suggested one.She said the same as you, once you start counting steps, you will want to do more and more to beat the day before. Also this appeals to my competitive streak as id like to do more steps a day than she does 😉
