HOW MUCH EXERCISE DO YOU DO?

That's exactly what I've been wanting to hear. Thanks.
I've been in the gym every day since and I'm losing weight. But the lack of carbs was starting to hit me hard. Been doing 3 weights days and 4 cardio.
Also, I'd like to get back to Brazilian Jiu.jitsu in the evenings.so would be adding 3.more.sessions per week (6hrs training) on top of this. I only found out as I was at.the doctor with a shoulder injury from it. Just trying to adjust my diet.then get back.

Thanks.

It sounds like you’re making a big change. Just remember, consistency is more effective than blunt force trauma when it coms to a lifestyle change - you need to be able to sustain it. I still go for walks everyday, i even schedule work calls as i am out and about.

If I can impart one final bit of advice, if youre seeking to lose weight fast - invest in some good skin cream! Your skin will thank you for it!

Sorry for the long post! Just got to the end and realised quite how long!

So I am trying to make the move away from being a couch potato. I lost a good bit of weight since covid, I think the extra time at home gave more time for thinking about food and reducing some of the rubbish. I was starting from at the very least 17.5 stone or 110kg absolute minimum. When I was diagnosed this summer it was about 95kg and after diet changes is about 75-77kg. I planned on diagnosis to start exercising more, starting with increased dog walking and gym membership but delayed due to a house move which in itself was good exercise with trips to the dump, numerous stairs (split level house, 3 half flights of stairs moving to a town house and 2 full flights of stairs). I should add I'm about 5'10/11" and a 52 yo male who's not really exercised beyond walking the dogs for years,

An investment in a Fitbit Charge 6 gave me a baseline of where I was/am in terms of activity and fitness and is interesting to track various things like sleep. Generally good but disappointed that is has no altimeter and doesn't track stairs and can be hard to switch between activities, would look elsewhere next time. I also got some cheap bathroom scales with body fat percentage, water % and BMI (though I work out the last from weight) to keep an eye on things.

Just before Christmas I joined my local PureGym through work with a cheap corporate membership. Good but very lacking in terms of help getting going with a brief show-round of the place and nothing more as a result beyond stretches and some cardio I've not really done lots else and will have to invest in a session or two with a personal trainer to work on some strength exercises so not the saving it might have been compared to the local council run place (closer and easier to get to though, a few minutes away and open 24x7).

It's only been a few weeks but so far, so good. Not the best time of year to join with all the New Year resolutions but I'm managing 2-3 times per week for 40+ extra minutes of cardio each time vs just walking the dogs (by this time next year we'll have a spaniel with legs like a daschund though 🙂). The scales suggest I'm steady on weight and am slightly improving body fat percentage which suggests adding muscle which is my aim, replace a good bit of the remaining fat with muscle, I used to be a sprinter 30+ years ago but am now looking like a skinny weakling!

The best thing is feeling better, more healthy and not gasping for air or sweating after the slightest exercise any more as well as hopefully helping with the diabetes control. With that in mind I would totally recommend to anyone considering more exercise find something you're happy with, even just walking round the block a few times a week to take the plunge. Longer term I aim to take up a sport again, possibly tennis or squash if my daughter will take part, if not maybe back to the track for the seniors competitions though I'm perhaps a bit past it for that!

@Mark72 how you getting on?

Sounds like good progress so far

The physio explained it take three times as long to rebuild fitness as it takes to lose it.
Thankfully, I was given to go ahead to start using (low) weights. I guess that means I will be back to my “usual” weights in 9 months. 😱
My operation last April took me out of sport / fitness for way longer than I appreciated, because it took me longer to even be able to manage normal daily tasks and then get out even for a walk.
It was months (and I don’t even want to count) until my walking fitness was as good as was pre op. I thought I’d be back running in a few weeks. I’ve been doing twice weekly rugby training for 5 years, and plenty of daily walking plus extra at weekends so I was fit before hand. I’m nearly at a year since and I’m not as fit or as strong as I was but I’m way more motivated to be fitter and stronger because when a short walk has me puffing and feeling weak that was too much realisation for me to use it or loose it.

Having been out of action most of last year, mainly due to whooping cough, I've signed up for an ultra challenge so I'm back out walking. I'm 10 weeks out from the event and will be upping the distance of my training walks as of tomorrow. I'm also adding in home workouts 3 times a week.

Hi PhoebeC, I'm still going to the gym and getting out more regularly with the dogs than I was a year ago. Only a couple of sessions per week at the gym but I've started doing a few bits of the weights in the last couple of weeks, just trying to use a couple of bits of equipment either side of the cross trainer. I used to run competitively as a teenager and the weights I did back then put current me to shame. I need to push myself into going more often. And in saying that, time for the lunchtime dog walk!

Hey @Jiminho77 did you get back to the mats and start rolling again?
It's been absolutely huge for me. A place of solace to continue beating the hell out of my diabetes! I'm practising nearly everyday now bar the weekend.

Doing about 8.5 hour BJJ a week and 1 hour Judo now.
Couple of hours from the 8.5 is open mat so that's tough but my god, it's absolutely brilliant. I'm trying to film all sessions to remind myself i have come and and how i pushed myself into remission.

There's an absolutely unit at the gym whose just started with us, ex Semi-Pro Rugby player and he has said that there is not sport that come close to how this pushes his endurance.

Keep us posted on your journey!

Osss!

I'm wearing a CGI monitor just now and I'm afraid someone would whack it off unintentionally during rolling. Wanted to see how.my.glucose was.and.if I'm heading in the right direction towards remission.
The monitor runs out on Wednesday so Thursday morning I plan to go. Haven't been since the diagnosis. Desperate to get back.
Looking at doing the National Masters in September so I better get my finger out. Haha. Hopefully get better than the silver I got last time.
Yeah. They rugby lads are units. I've an ex international player who's in my club. He wrecks me. Really can't wait to start back.

I'd be interested to hear how you get on with a CGM (and where you put it), I can't help but think mine would get ripped off pretty quickly if went back to doing Aikido (with bit fair bit of judo grappling thrown in.)

I would love to get back to it though now I have more time.

Thought it would be a good idea to open a new thread as to how much exercise we each do on a daily/weekly basis. I for one have resumed exercising on my exercise bike twice a day to help me stay as fit as I can atm & also to maintain a good bgls. My old back prevents me from walking too far for any length of time but I'm hoping to resume swimming soon, used to swim 1mile x 4times per wk (No back pain when swimming) Didn't learn to swim till I was 63! My right knee doesn't currently condone exercise so i start off slowly on my exercise bike then build up, a replacement knee could be on the cards! I also do stretching & floor exercises.

Type2 since April 2016
Diet & exercise only
Incidental walking with the dog and cycling (when I have to) but mainly weights. I am post menopausal . I keep fat down by low carb and lift weights to remain strong.

@SimonP & @Jiminho77

I play rugby, train twice a week and matches every 1/2 weeks and I have never in 5 years lost a CGM. I had the libre until a few weeks ago and would only wrap it up if it was very damp or muddy. Now I have the Dexcom G6 which can be worn in more places so less likely to be knocked off. Grabbing is different though. I say give it a go, wrap it or there's loads of patches and stickers out there. Or as you say when it's nearly due to come off anyway then you haven't lost one but can test.

While experiences vary, amongst other things, I’m also a professional Thai boxer - and while I have had to adjust competing I still do teach. And as you can imagine it is quite full on - I’ve had to resort to wearing an over-patch (if you use Dexcom each CGM comes with one) and they are very sturdy and I can think of only one instance where my CGM was ruined (side knee that I parried with my CGM arm) but nothing will survive that.

The adhesive is extremely strong with an over patch so give it a go would be my recommendation.

Haven't moved since Christmas, been quite ill. Went to my sisters yesterday and lost a pound without trying. I'm not that bothered re weight, given up really, but I want to be able to move easily and get up the stairs like a human not a chimpanzee. I've seized up. 🙂 I'm aiming to go to my sisters everyday. I think she'll be pleased. :D

Went back to Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Missed it too much plus I plan on competing in September to so thought I'd better get in. Had put on another CGM but wore a patch and put a shoulder brace over it too. Was fine. No issues at all.

I'm just so glad to getting back on the mats. Taking it gently just now as I've not been in since I was diagnosed on the 11th January. And this should help with putting it in remission. Especially as I've stopped taking Metformin as it was messing with my stomach so doing it the good old fashioned way of diet and exercise hopefully will help. The monitor has my HBA1C predicted at 46 (not good enough I think)so I've another few weeks to whack that down before I'm due another blood test. It'll be just after Easter I'd be able to get a test as I'm away on holiday at the start of April.

So just a couple sessions this week and I'll keep increasing it back to the normal 4-5 sessions I'd normally do. It's usually an hour's class followed by an hour's sparring so I do think I'll have to adjust carb intake a bit to help but should be fine.
