I thought nothing of weeing more as I was drinking loads but didn't think anything of that as I was running around a shop floor, heavy lifting etc from 9-5, I'd had blood tests as initially they thought I might have an over active thyroid (my dad's mum had while most in my mums side have an underactive thyroid) but it came back fine and my hba1c came back raised (I don't know what as I wasn't told) so I was asked to go in and see a nurse for a fasting finger prick, apparently it was high (again wasn't told what) so off she popped to chat with a doctor, was asked to come back and see a doctor that afternoon, off I went to work, went back and the doctor checked for ketones (urine way) and they were present so off I went to hospital, I'm not sure if my hip pain was linked to undiagnosed diabetes (was agony getting up stairs and living in a middle flat I couldn't avoid them!) but that went away soon after starting insulin along with the permanent cracks at the sides of my mouth! xx

@stephknits I hadn't heard your story before so it was interesting to read..... In fact they all are and it is interesting to see how many of us were misdiagnosed and how quickly or slowly that was rectified. Looks like I was really lucky!

It is funny how you remember that meal with your friend as I am the same with my meal of steak and ale pie with chips and mushy peas just before my symptoms hit. I also washed it down with a glass of pineapple juice (since i was driving) which was probably the tipping point.
Not the obvious "unhealthy" carbs, but definitely a plate of carbs, carbs and more carbs!

washed it down with a glass of pineapple juice
The only thing that seemed to quench my thirst for half hour or so was orange juice. I got through gallons of the stuff!! I know now that was the worst thing to have

The pineapple juice was just my choice of drink in the pub with my meal before the symptoms started. Once the thirst hit me, all I wanted was water and I drank pints of it all night and the following weeks but interestingly I didn't feel drawn to anything sweet to eat or drink as some people seem to be. In fact I would say that that water tasted the sweetest water has even tasted.

I was on the water overnight as i hadnt got the energy to go downstairs to the fridge. Other times def the juice though the quenching didnt last long.
