Type 2
Hi

Just thought, I would say hello, got diagnosed, with type 2 just over a week ago, though was identified as pre from Jan 2020.

It is so bewildering, but I guess, my body, has felt, there was something up for a while, I wonder how long, I could have been a prediabetic.

its tricky to juggle( need to quit smoking too) and, my old disussed treadmill has definitely come in handy, but at a very slow pace

I am gonna miss, stuff like ketchup, pasta, rice, bread and potatoes, I have chanced it a few times, with a baguette and subway, but the results are still being processed. I guess, the killer, is the dressing, owing to sugar content.

anyways, I am rambling on

Hello and welcome to the forum @J47.

It certainly is bewildering at the beginning and will take time to get used to. There's a lot of wisdom here, so please feel free to ask any questions if you're unsure of anything. People on this forum are friendly and willing to help! 🙂

Good luck with quitting smoking too, I appreciate it's no easy thing to do. Did you receive good support from your medical team on ways to quit smoking?

Hello @J47 and welcome from me as well.
Sounds like your making a great start with changing your eating plans and stepping back on the treadmill.

There is indeed a great deal to get used to, but best just to take things steadily and make changes gradually that you can sustain for the long term

Not that I eat many Subways, but the bread's the main problem for me, not whatever I choose to have between it! In truth, one day a few years ago when we went to Bath with eldest daughter & SIL and their eldest grandson aged c.6 at that time, his children's meal - a 3inch Sub with whatever - would have been the right size for me at lunchtime! Except I wanted coffee not a cold drink!

Welcome to the forum @J47

Good to hear that you have already clocked that it is carbohydrates which need to be reduced.

Sugar content can have an effect, but is far far less significant than most people would expect. A few grams of sugar in a dressing can only have a limited effect, whereas the main ‘starchy carb’ content would make up the vast majority of the total available carbs.

Your body will happily break it all down, and doesn’t really prioritise sucrose all that much. Total carbs is the more useful bit of information 🙂

Ketchup and brown sauce - personally I eat approx a dessert spoonful - if that much - of either, at any one time hence totally ignore any carbs in it.

My first husband used shedloads more than me, so he might have needed to count it - but it's only supposed to enhance the flavour of whatever, not swamp it! You know - like salt on chips, S&P on an egg etc.

Welcome @J47

Any questions please fire away.

Good luck on stopping smoking. I know, from personal experience, how hard that can be. I finally stopped after my birthday in 2018 and started on a vape. I set up an app called My Last Cigarette which tells me that since then I have saved £20295! When ever I fell tempted I have a look.

Hello and welcome to the forum @J47 🙂

I may get that gretchen baxter book,

Over £20,000 in 3 years?! Wow must have smoked a lot. I know how hard it is i gave up suddenly a year ago after 40 years and have amazed myself and family and friends with my willpower. I feel so much better. I didnt realise how short of breathe it made me. I went cold turkey. Lovely to breathe again and so good i would never go back despite missing it and could have done with them a few times over the past year due to stress of being diagnosed and covid etc.
@J47 you won't regret giving up and i am the last person i thought would be saying that. I loved smoking but honestly feel so much better without them.

er, I haven't remotely given up yet. I am stating it something I need to look at, I gave booze up in december, suddenly, my diet is very different, I am walking or treadmilling 40-50 minutes a day so, am still allowing myself, the smoking for the time being, but ultimately I need to quit owing to this diagnosis, in particular

Lol yes one thing at a time i understand that. Just saying in the end you will be so glad you if you manage to give up. Good luck and well done with the cutting drinking and exercise.

30 B&H a day. Scary thing is that the wife smoked the same and started vaping at the same time so in practice we have saved twice that amount!

Well done the pair of you! Could treat yourself to some nice holidays with the savings when we can eventually travel.....

my daily diet consists of a bowl of fresh twigs, suppplemented with dandylions and rain water, for lunch, I have a portion of mud, some graphite with a side helping of ants( hello Klaus Swabb) and my evening meal, consists of fried sellotape, with a side portion of, bubble wrap, topped off with a dashings of cigarette ash, for my special treat of the occasional takeaway, I mix it up and have a bowl of raw unprocessed hail stones, with sandpaper, and carpet shavings, I feel fantastic

Hi @J47 , mmm...sounds mmm... interesting 😉 with loads of different textures. Different strokes for different folks. Enjoy!

Seriously, it doesn't have to be like this!
My first 6 weeks felt like that and were like eating cardboard, until I started to look for the low carb foods/treats which would make my menu enjoyable again without spiking my BG levels. The big turning point for me was accepting that fat was not the enemy and should be an important part of my diet, despite the NHS low fat advice. I now start my day with a cup of coffee with double cream and often end it with a small glass of red or port with a chunk of nice cheese. Hard to feel too deprived when you begin and end the day like that.
It has involved experimenting and trying new foods and learning how to cook new things in different ways but I enjoy my food now and wouldn't go back to my old way of eating even though I could.

Not tempted, I'm afraid I had steak, mushrooms, a little raw chopped onion, and a stir fry, then jelly, raspberries and cream, and coffee with cream. I ought to have eaten Greek yoghurt with the berries, but I just absent mindedly tipped the cream over them.

I did a chicken casserole. Chicken thighs marinated for 24 hours in red wine then fried off to brown, baby onions, celery, thyme. button mushrooms, good chicken stock and in the oven for an hour. Delicious!

As someone who has also been recently diagnosed, I know exactly what you're going through. This forum seems like a great place to find help and support, and I hope that you're able to do this. Good luck with it all!
