Hi how are we all got I diagnosed 10 days ago
Got appointments next week to see dietician etc. My test says I was a 10 ( whatever that means ) also been put on metformin
Day 1 1x 500
Day 4 2 x 500
Day 7 3 x 500
 
Welcome to the forums. Whilst I'm not type2 there are plenty of people here who are and tons if support. Also plenty of knowledge too.

Hello @Jeff Stocking welcome to the forum. That test sounds like the Hb1ac, it is an average of your blood glucose level over the last three months.
I was much higher when I was first diagnosed a long time ago.

Fortunately Diabetes is a condition that with the right info and a bit of work we can manage well.

How are you coping with the Metfartin as it’s often not so fondly called here.

Take your time going through it as their is a lot to take in.

Their is a link to a much recommended book by Gretchen Becker called T2 Diabetes the first year, she has T2 herself and goes through month by month her first year .
And if you want to self test to see how the various carbohydrates affect you do ask the nurse for a glucose meter, if as is highly likely you are told no it’s not necessary, we here believe that self testing helps us gain better control as we can make informed choices on what carbs are good and bad for us.
You’ll find a link to The SD Codefree meter there too, it’s the cheapest one we know of to self fund the ongoing cost of the testing strips.

Hi Jeff. I bet you’ve always wanted to be a perfect 10 but not in this way! :D This is the chart conversion if your 10 is from a Hba1c blood test (which measures the average glucose level over approx 3 months). That equates to 86 which you’ll see is high but we’ve many on here who’ve come back from much higher.

Don’t confuse those measurements with the finger prick tests which are done by a different measurement (just to confuse us). Doesn’t sound like you’re home testing and most doctors won’t prescribe testing strips to type 2’s but it’s worth doing to keep an eye on how your food is impacting. Lin has given good advice on that above.
You need to aim for below 7 on waking/before food and no higher than 8.5 two hours after eating. Hard to achieve at first but if you cut down the spuds, rice, pasta, bread, cakes, pies, pizza etc. and try for a bit more exercise, especially after meals, you’ll start to see success. Good luck! 😛

HbA1c (blood taken from the arm) test is an average from the last 8-12 weeks.
30(?)-41 is "normal"
42-47 is called pre diabetic
48 and above get's you a diagnoses of diabetic (which you keep even if you go down.)

To confuse matters, there is an old scale that some people still use (6.5=48). It has numbers that look similar to those you get from a finger prick test. However, that tells you something different.
 
Welcome @Jeff Stocking i was diagnosed 11 weeks ago and it’s been a rollercoaster of a ride. You will get lots of support and advice on the forum so ask questions no questions is ever silly or daft we are all learning.
The 10 is your Hba1c 10 = 86 which is high. mine was 12.9 (117) and with the right diet and advice from the forum I’ve dropped my Hba1c to 6.2 (44) in 10 weeks just to show you type 2 is a manageable condition.
As I don’t know if you have any other condition you will need to see your Diabetes team but look into a low carb diet. Carbs (potatoes rice bread pastry pasta all turn in to glucose in our body’s and make controlling our BGL harder.

Looks like I need to be reading up loads
From the start I starting eating cereal ( crunchy nut cornflakes and semi skimmed milk )
After joining here realised that isn’t very good as a breakfast, another one was eating 3 bits of white toast and a can of Heinz baked beans
Thinking I was being good. But again not a great breakfast.
Since trying to cut sugar out I’ve become rather snappy and to people at home ( in general not like me at all is this common ) ? Or just me

I found myself snapping at people when I first got diagnosed some of my medications didn’t help. I think the main reason was I wasn’t handling the diagnosis well and took me a while to get my head around things. So I was getting frustrated and irritated even though people were just trying to help. I’m a lot better now still have the odd low or bad day but nowhere near as many.

I was very p*ssed off with the diagnosis. Not overweight (hardly), moderate exercise & as far as I knew pretty good diet, managed to avoid doctors for decades. Then suddenly I've got diabetes and I have to worry about my "healthy" breakfast of fruit, melon and wholewheat toast. Took it out on the cat with snarls & sarcasm, ashamed to say. You'll probably get over it mostly as you work out how to get control - for me, measuring a lot has been the big thing, so far.
