Hi all not been on for a while it seems I have hit a point when I have had to shout at my Doctor. I have now for some time been struggling to get my sugars down now at this point I am convinced that it is not my fault.

Just before Christmas I went to the Doctors for the annual check up and I was found to have high results. Ok this has been the case for some time so The Doctors decided to mess around with Medication. 6 Weeks Later I am getting the same results. SO more messing around with Medication. To my Horror the same results. And the same thing happened again.

So this morning I have decided enough now I my doctor is a very one in my opinion but that also seems to be everyone else's, and its a nightmare to get in to see her. So this morning I go and say to her the we have now tried various medications and regimes and nothing has worked. At which point she took my blood pressure and then went ummmmm.

Exenatide is now the solution.

My question is, is there anyone else on this and has it worked or does anyone have any more information they could share other than the stuff I can find on the Internet.

I have decided to go for the slow release Once a week injection starting on Friday.

I have tried so hard since before Christmas to get these damn levels in check damn frustrating I am playing footie twice a week swimming cycling Diet and still the damn thing does not budge

Anyway any input would be appreciated

Thanks Guys

may one suggest that actually Insulin might be the solution ?
Why continue to play about with palliatives ?

It is very frustrating when nothing sems to work and the doctor keeps messing around withthings. I hiope the new medication works and you feel better.

There are a few in here taking Exenatide/Byetta. It did me no good at all, but it works for others. I'd say it's worth a go.

Hi I am with Alison was on this last year but was no joy to me, it's well worth ago though , I'm now on Victoza which is similar but not exactly the same as Byetta.

Good luck

Thanks People for the reply I agree I have to at least give it a go.

So I will see how it works nothing else has.

Hi Wakman, did you start the Exenatide and if so how are you getting on with it.

I start it tomorrow! I will be on the twice daily injections, so hope it works.

Hi guys, as an Exenatide user I wil bring some positive sounds to the topic.

I went on to it 3yrs ago now, when all my meds were maxed and the only other option was insulin. Was 19st+ and didnt want a growth hormone adding to that!

On twice a day injections, took a few weeks to get used to it, so be prepared for some side effects (nausea, lack of appetite, vomiting) for the first few days, but settled soon enough.

I persuaded them to let me go on it depsite being much more expensive that insulin on the condition I understood it was a trial- they didnt really expect me to do my bit (regular exercise and better eating).

However 3yrs later, am 15 stone or a bit less, running London Marathon on Sunday (wasnt runner at all back then) and BGs and BP much much better.

I havent found it too cumbersome and do forget sometimes, without any impact, so it can work.

I know it doesnt for all, but it is worth trying for more than a couple of weeks.

Good luck with it
Malc

Thanks Malc, useful info. Main problem is I am going on hols in two weeks, so hope it settles down before I go.

I have been on 2 injections per day of Exenatide since November. I got on well with it straight away. On my 3 monthly check up my hba1c had gone from 8.9 to 6.8 and I had lost 4 kilos. Trouble is have not lost weight since but I guess that is my fault. I do forget to do the injection sometimes, especially before my evening meal. Usually people go from 5 ml to 10 after a month but my doc said I was doing ok on 5. Hope you get on ok, let us all know how it goes.

Many thanks Pat. It obviously affects different people in different ways. Like most meds. So watch this space!

Well, picked up the script this morning.

Had a problem setting up the Byetta pen, but it was my fault, not pushing the needle on until it clicked. It then tested OK.

The needles were different to the ones the Doc demonstrated to me. The are "My life Clickfine AutoProtect". They have a Blue sleeve round the needle, which retracts when you inject, then a red sleeve covers the needle after the injection. They are 29g 8mm. So won't need the needle clipper.

Did the first injection half an hour before my evening meal. After ten minutes my stomach was gurgling and I had and still have a thick head. Other than that I'm OK. Hope the thick head goes off soon.

The doc said to check half an hour after my meal. This seems a bit soon to me. Normally, I leave at least two hours before testing. Either way, it will be interesting to see what my readings are as I have just had two Gliclazide! Plus the usual Beta Blocker.

It must be working. Last night 2 hrs after meal I wa 10.8.

Tonight 5.7! If that keeps on I will have to reduce the Gliclazide.

Hope the side-effects don't last long and that it works well for you Highlander! 🙂 If you've got a spare hour you might want to browse the following thread:

Thanks Northerner, I am part way through the post, pity it stopped, but very interesting, with lots of useful information.

I take beta blockers, two a day in the morning and evening, I think the Byetta may be causing a problem with it, as I have been frozen all evening. I will have to try taking the beta blocker at a different time.

Hi - I started on Byetta and noticed a difference in bs over night. Some people doubted it could be so quick, but it really was. Byetta really did what it was supposed to do, but did make me very sick indeed. I seem to remember it making me sick when I increased the dose, the starter dose was okay.

I have now moved to Victoza (don't be afraid to ask if Byetta does make you too ill - but it is more expensive so you may have to push if you need to).

I am now fighting my way back on Victoza (after being naughty and refusing to take it for a while) and already am feeling the benefit. I did try and increase the victoza too quickly and it made me sick - so my advice would be take it easy with it - give it time to get into your system. If you need longer on the lower dose, take it.

Another tip - even though you may not like it, I would buy some ginger tea - it really helps the nausea period.

I hope it works for you and your results continue to improve.🙂

Well I was 5.9 this morning but have been feeling terrible all day.

An hour or so after the jab I suddenly started to feel very nauseous this lasted for nearly five hours, then I got a stinking headache.

It also seems to adversely affect my other medication. I take Beta Blockers for heart problems and have had chest pain most of the morning. The diuretic has taken its revenge all day. I had a job keeping my eyes open so had a nap in the chair.

In between all this had didn't have lunch, but a light snack mid afternoon. Put my BS up to 9.2 before dinner.

I am just about feeling reasonable and now its time for the next jab.:(

Ack! I hope that things are better as you become used to it Highlander. If you really can't bear it, some people get on better with Victoza, so that may be an option.

Thanks for the tips Lucy. Hope you get on OK with the Vicotza, it would appear that I can't go on Victoza as it is not suitable for people with heart disease and I have two heart problems, so I expect the next option will be insulin. Time will tell.

I will keep going with the Byetta for the next week to see how I get on. Unless the side effects get too bad.

Cheers
