Well I've had a bit of a day of it today. I've been having a wee bit of an issue with post meal spikes at lunch time. For me this can be a sign that I have too much basal insulin, because I seem to need more background insulin between 10am and 12:30 than any other time so by 12:30 I start to trickle downwards if there's a bit too much basal. Whilst at work I have a fixed lunch at 12 till 1 normally, so it can be tricky to work out if the post meal spikes are actually caused by a rebound when I inject bolus at roughly the same time as I'm already on the trickle downwards. Still with me? Sorry this is a bit complex.
Anyway today I had a meeting till 1pm so decided to see if I dropped between 12:30 and 1:00, and yes there it was I dropped about 1.5 mmol/l in 30 minutes and ended up with a mid 3, must have been still dropping because I most definitely wasn't with it. Had three jelly babies, then ate half my lunch and injected mid meal. This strategy generally works for me. At 3 I felt funny tested and was 15mmol/l. I never go that high, well I haven't since the six weeks post diagnosis. Tested twice just to make sure, and it was 16 so clearly a problem. Looked at the LCD screen on the pen and it showed I'd injected half a unit😱. I'd intended to inject 2.5 units. So I whipped out my pen and jabbed in 2.5 units without thinking. So it was coming down nicely, and when I left work it was about normal, by the time I got to the bus stop I realised I was having a hypo so tested in the peeing down rain (challenging 🙄) 1.9, panic riffle for jelly babies, none in my bag, and remember they're on my desk where I'd left them. Super panic because the bus stop isn't near a shop. Bit more riffling and I find a sachet of sugar I've thrown in there at some point. So there I am dripping wet through eating sugar from a packet. Knew it wouldn't be enough but thought it might get me up enough to get across the dual carriage way and walk to sainsburys. Nope tested again 1.5. Major panic, and everyone at the bus stop is riffling through bags looking for sugar. Thankfully a mum with a tot had some juice in a carton, so I glug that down and thank god my bus turns up. Just before getting off the bus I've managed to get back to 3.9. Tested when I got back in the house and I'm back to 2.9. Seven jelly babies later I was 5.2. Ruddy Norah is all I can say. I feel like I've been hit by a bus!
On the plus side I now know my correction factor in the afternoon is the same as the evening 1 unit for a 5mmol/l drop, and the basal needs to go back down. The reversey Percy routine of spikes meaning I need less insulin is just so counterintuitive and hard to get my head around I'm not sure I'll ever get used to it. Also insulin sensitivity is just crappy, there I've said it, I know it means I get generally lower blood sugar more easily but seriously it's like a constant white knuckle ride, half a unit too much insulin and I'm off. Just felt the need to vent, and confess my stupidity
