Doctors appointment (call) tomorrow am - help with prepping

Whatever is going to get you the quicker action. Hard to turn somebody away from the GP when they have their glucose monitor in their hand showing a reading in the high twenties

I’d call the specialist clinic as first point of call and ask if anyone could call you earlier than your scheduled appointment as your blood sugars are in the high 20s and you’re very worried about it.

If no help there then call the GP and ask for an urgent appointment. Most places you either need to fill in a form or call at 8am.
OK this is what I will do tomorrow first thing. I don't know what I'd do without this group. It's been so helpful and such a comfort. Thank you all. This is my now evening number and I had low carb.

I’d call the clinic first and if you get no help or you’re not certain it will be quick enough, phone the GP and ask for an emergency appointment. See any doctor available. I’d tell them you’re a possible Type 1; you’re seeing frequent blood sugars in the late 20s; you’re feeling unwell; and you had DKA recently (tell them where and when).

Does anyone know what this means. My meter does that and even just now I tried it twice and got that result. I used enough blood.

It looks as if it is saying HI which generally means the reading is so high it is out of range that the monitor is capable of measuring.
I should test for ketones with your dip sticks to check.
Try and drink plenty and test again in half an hour.
Excellent suggestion from Inka.

Going to A&E would be the best to keep you safe and precipitate effective treatment.

Gosh @Mbabazi I hope you are able to be seen promptly.

This all just seems so unnecessary. It would have been so much more straightforward to give you more appropriate treatment from the off.

Hang in there matey, we are rooting for you.

Yes, just popped in to check all ok. How are things?

Hi everyone.

Thank you so much for the advice. I only went to a and e in the morning and my bg was 22.3 when they checked and ketone 0.6 point so they're managing me here. They gave me insulin and and will send me home with it. They're also going to do the full antibody testing which is an advantage because my next blood test was only next week so getting it all done is useful. I'm waiting for an insulin education class in he next few hours but also googling alot and we will go from there. It was a very good decision to come in and I already feel lighter about my situation. Perhaps there is a new to insuring thread here that I could read. The doctor said something about not wanting to bring my numbers down so fast. Since I was tethering on 30s they prefer to bring it to teens before single digits. They're also going to run the kidney functioning and such tests too. Thank you all so much

Thank goodness you are OK and are now getting the right treatment.

Great news that you’ve finally got the insulin you need @Mbabazi ! You’ll feel a lot better once you’ve got that up and running. Have that got you on a saline drip too to rehydrate you?
Yes, it’s best to bring blood sugar down slowly as it’s less shock to the body, particularly the eyes. So, you’ll be given higher blood sugar targets than you might see here. These will gradually be lowered. Also, people are usually started on a low dose of insulin and it’s gradually built up (for safety reasons and to allow you to get used to it).
I really hope they give you both a basal (background) insulin and a bolus (meal, fast) insulin.

Very pleased you are OK and finally getting what sounds like proper attention
Perhaps there is a new to insulin thread here that I could read.
Terrific suggestion. I can't remember seeing anything like that in my 3+ yrs of being active on this forum, yet it seems so obvious. But I can't believe we don't have something somewhere. Perhaps @everydayupsanddowns can delve into his amazing useful information bag and find a rabbit or similar in there?

@Proud to be erratic I guess because people start on different insulins (eg some start on basal only) so it would only be brief, general guidance. Moreover, individuals might have additional concerns or needs, eg they might be pregnant, very elderly, a young child, etc etc.

It wouldn’t be good to have too much advice that might not apply to everyone and might contradict what they’ve been told by their HCP.

Glad to hear you have got appropriate treatment!
Feel free to ask any insulin queries you have here or start a new thread if you prefere.
What insulin(s) are you on?

There are various info pages here @Mbabazi eg this one:

And this downloadable guide:

Thanks @Inka ! You beat me to it!

Thank goodness you are back on insulin at last @Mbabazi

Hope the additional checks provide some clarity and a positive direction for your treatment going forward @Mbabazi - it feels like you’ve had a real uphill slog to get to this point.

Happy with what you say @Inka - Emma and her video was very much the sort of thing I envisaged. It just seemed to me that the link to that could / should be pinned to our welcome and getting started part of the Forum. After all there is so much else there.... Anyway between yourself and @everydayupsanddowns, it seems covered.
