I had my gallbladder removed about 15 years ago, and I also have a hiatus hernia.

I'm enjoying the Mediterranean diet and recipes from the Carbs and Cals books, but the reduced amount of food I'm eating is leaving me with awful heartburn, especially at night.

I already take Omeprazole, and the nurse suggested having gaviscon too, but only eating a snack helps. I don't really want to increase my calorie intake just so I'm not waking up choking during the night.

There must be a better way!

Any ideas gratefully received.

A typical day's food looks like:

Chia breakfast pot
Chicken salad
Rice cake and cheese
Turkey meatballs and v small portion brown rice

I'd like to avoid a snack after that - I've been eating around 8pm-ish and that helps with cravings but the heartburn is making it hard.

I do sometimes have spicy food but that doesn't seem to make any noticeable difference.

Thanks for reading!

Have you tried probiotic yoghurt, I found omeprazole pretty effective when I had a issue some years ago. Is it since your change in diet that the heartburn is worse. It maybe your stomach needs to adjust.
Could it be caused by any medication you are taking.

Thanks

No new medication, and yes it's just since the change in diet.

Maybe a silly question but, are you taking the Omeprazole as soon as you get out of bed in a morning with plain water and then not eating or drinking anything at all for at the very least, half an hour thereafter, though a full hour is better. PITA though that is, but otherwise there's a chance it won't do its' stuff.

No. I was told to take it at night because that's when the heartburn is worst. But I don't eat or drink afterwards.

Was that bad advice? I take all my meds at once because I'm on an 8 year waiting list for help with my ADHD and I have trouble remembering stuff but I have a really supportive spouse who could help in the morning if I need to change things.

I've been on Omeprazole for a couple of years and it's been working reasonably well till the last couple of weeks.

A few overnight thoughts. Reading the leaflet in my omeprazole it says to take in the morning either with or without food, It implies it is a slow release capsule 20mg so would be effective throughout the day in reducing the acid production, this is what a proton pump inhibitor does. So I wonder if by taking it in the evening it has not had a chance to start working to counteract your heartburn.
Logic says that having less carbohydrate which converts to glucose which the gut bacteria will metabolise and produce acid.
It maybe you need a higher dose temporarily until your system settles to your different dietary regime.

I actually take Lanzaprozole not O, so I may easily be wrong and if so, apologise cos L absolutely isn't slow release, bit Dr explained to me that L needs a complely empty stomach to work properly on as it has to engage with some receptors at the bottom of the stomach to be effective. The early morning regime seems to work fine with the L but is a PITA then having to wait to then take my Levothyroxine and then wait again after taking them, before taking my BP drugs and Clopidogrel when it's that latter thing which actually causes most of my acid reflux.
Just aargghh growing flippin old! 😱 🙂

My OH was taking clopidogrel but was changed onto apixaban, not sure why. Maybe that would suit you better if suitable.

I've often used Bicarbonate of Soda in sparkling water, worked for me everytime... I do take Rabeprazole for acid reflux and have a HH.

Maybe a strange suggestion but worked nights in hospitals for many years, nearly everyone seemed to suffer with heart burn. We carried a packet of love hearts or refreshers as they both contain bicarbonate of soda, worked nearly every time.
Sugary though so could be a problem.

Thanks so much everyone. I love the lovehearts idea!

I second the love hearts. I have LPR, Silent reflux. I have a glug of Gaviscon advanced before and after meals and before bed when mine is playing up. Has to be the aniseed liquid. It’s quite expensive but sainsburys do their own brand which is way cheaper.

I think the Clopidogrel is more specific for the PAD I have - and also it depends on why you need your blood thinning as to which drugs they prescribe to do it.

My other half was put on it when he had a TIA but then it was changed for apixaban with no explanation.

I have only experienced heartburn a couple of times, but it was resolved instantly by a sip of the cream I put in my coffee.

The effect of the same food cooked in different way can be interesting, I could have eggs any way except scrambled which always gave me indigestion.

Oil of peppermint capsules should help but check first if unsure, Holland & Barrett sell one a day caps so try taking one before bed with water, also raising your upper body whilst sleeping helps either by using extra pillow or propping mattress up.

Had period good few years back where heartburn was persistent, these measures were recommended & did help matters at time.

I definitely should raise my bed. I'll look into the peppermint. Unfortunately fatty food sets it off too (and caffeine) so limited on the cream (and my pizza days are over for far too many reasons! )

What about Mint tea. Ginger is also supposed to be good.

Both spicy & fatty food can set mine off, so avoid spicy stuff but still enjoy fatty meals just not all the time.
