I use the traffic lights as a quick guide and I’ve got used to checking the carbs . Anyway I’ve ditched chips, hash brown and similar and upped the veg
As a quick example for me was 4 or 5 sausages , chips or similar with some frozen veg. I’m no cook and never will be. I’ve just found some different sausages with lower ratings, dropped down to 3 a meal so obviously lower portion and as I said upped the veg.
That has to be a significant drop. There’s no way I’m going down the route of measuring portions or blood testing.
This is just me no offence to anyone. I’ve had some awesome advice on here.
Even have avocado spread instead of butter sometimes although that’s damn expensive.
I’m actually using my diabetes as a good thing changing my eating habits will help with my stroke recovery .
I exercise a lot , stroke recovery specific exercises .
Don’t drink , don’t smoke .@s’nic
Sounds like progress, and yup, traffic lights only ever a initial check, followed by a squint at the all important carb numbers.
I've not kept up with my exercise this week, but have run around like a mad thing cos of my godsons wedding tomorrow, so I figure I've had my exercise lol.
I don't smoke, and ever since I had covid alcohol causes bad hiccups, it's crazy!

I have found quite a big difference in the carbs of sausages, anything from 1.5g per sausage to 4 or more.

That is exercise. Another on of my Nuero Physios themes. Housework, gardening, walking to the shops carrying shopping, decorating, sorting boxes out are all exercises.
I was taking the green rubbish bin to the end of the drive. It was heavy and the wheels kept trying to shoot the bin from under me. A banal thing but I was using muscles , my balance, foot placement, hand eye co ordination, stamina, burned a few calories.
It’s not just about jogging or weights. In fact far from it.
Enjoy the wedding, work out how much exercise you do during the day. You will be surprised.

Hi Manji, I was diagnosed with Type 2 yesterday. I have really found this thread interesting. I was told by the Nurse at my doctors practise after yearly blood tests (I have an underactive thyroid), and apart from a load of leaflets, a prescription for metaform and being told to up my exercise, I left feeling completely overwhelmed and devastated. So thank you for asking a lot of the question I need the answer to. I will carry on following with interest.

Yep nurse was very dismissive . She clearly looked at her notes “ old bloke with stroke this is going to be easy “ how wrong she was. Id already read about Metformin and challenged her on that .
Maybe Im a cynical g@t but I had the vibe chuck him some metformin and tell him to exercise( coincidence ?) I stared going on about my stroke exercises, Then she told me to check my feet .
Dont forget this is my experience theres far wiser heads on here.
Im probably repeating myself but Ive had far more help on here.
Did they tell you what your “ count “was ? Im sure she said the threshold was 48 and I was 51.

OK thought I’d mention my dietary changes . I’m really trying not to get too bogged down with totting the cards up.
Most of my changes seem sensible.
I started with a brunch about 10.30 with a bowl of Lizzis Granola fairly high carb 45g a serving with Almond Milk. Nice and filling though
Then the main meal at about 5pm . 3 Heck Sausages a stunning 0.8g Carb altogether served with a good helping of Califlower Cheese 6g Carb , a sprinkle of Chia seeds and some diced raw celery .
I’m just going to have some after of a bowl of frozen raspberries covered in Alpro plant based yoghurt low carb low sugar.
I like my granola the Lizzis is fairly high but ( I think ) set off by the main meal.
Probably need to work on a Gronola substitute, tried porridge but didn’t enjoy it and it didn’t fill me up as much.
Any thoughts ?

I use the NHS App a lot but delved into my medical records today. Since my stroke I’ve had regular blood tests and they were all coming in well but the last one must have set off the NHS Algorithm and I was contacted.

Here’s a copy and paste of part of my results

I buy a Keto Hana granola which is only 9g carbs per 100g and mix 50/50 with Lizi's granola so the mixture is then only 26g carb per 100g but I still only have 20g with full fat Greek yoghurt and some berries, I find that is sufficiently filling to keep me going for 4-5 hours until lunch.

Nice tip. Thanks.

A lower carb granola is Eat Natural Protein granola - 17g carb for a 50g serving, if yoyu don't want to go the whole keto hog!

Probably need to work on a Gronola substitute,
Or buy a different granola or use a smaller portion? If you look at the labels there’s all different carb levels. M&S do a grain free one that’s low carb, I don’t low carb but have this one that’s pretty low.

This is the M&S one which I believe is both cheaper and lower carb than the one @Leadinglights buys. I haven’t tried it for taste.

Thank you, I'll go and look for that one next time I'm near an M & S.
I did buy another one off the internet but wasn't impressed so I use it mixed with almond flour, seeds and butter for a crumble topping.

Let me know what you think, as I walk past M&S regularly. I’ve enjoyed the one I currently have, but have the full blue box left and about one serving in the pink box, so won’t be needing to try another one yet for a while

As I’ve mentioned I’m recovering from a bad stroke. It’s been a few years but I’ve gone from ( NHS ) you’ll never walk again to I’m walking . I was wary about mentioning the Stroke and was remarkably annoyed when I was told about my blood test results but I’m now looking at seeing managing the Diabetes helping my stroke recovery.
Anyway at the moment “ housebound “ starting to venture outside is the next stage. I get my weekly shopping delivered so I’m restricted to Sainsburys and Amazon but I must say the specific tips on food are really helpful.

When I look at labels Carbs is the first thing and of course sugars.

Before I start googling it what’s the teams thoughts on protein drinks ? The reason I particularly ask is as practise I went out and strimmed the front lawn , quite a task but great exercise. Afterwards I was exhausted but the worst thing was this horrible “ fluttering “ feeling in my stomach ( that’s the only way I can describe it) and a craving for a decent snack.

It has been quite hot weather so important to make sure you stay well hydrated when you are doing something physical.
You could try having a protein nut bar like the Nature Valley protein bars 10g carb each, there are a few other makes with similar carbs, KIND or some shop own.
It partly depends on whether you actually feel hungry or just feel like something nice. Something like some cheese and Ryvita or a few nuts.

I think hungry and something nice. Something quick as well to get the horrible feeling to go away.

I was directly in the sun. That exercise was quite a big jump in the way I operate during the day. Can’t help myself. Looking back it was quite an achievement but all I was doing was being annoyed because I was feeling really rubbish

I feel like I’m deluding myself sometimes. The stroke recovery has been tough but it’s been continual slow progress because of the brainwashing of my Nuero Physio I know what to do , what to anticipate. One way I feel I’m on the case with the diabetes but another way I think it’s thrown me. I never saw it coming. It has thrown me.

These or am I losing the plot ?
