Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello recently diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes but having issues with my GP so apologies for the long explanation.Last August I was asked to make an appointment with my Practice Nurse , apparently my Hba1c was just above 47. She basically said I’d need my blood testing in 3 months and if it was still above 47 we’d need to have a more in depth talk. No real guidance given. I read a few bits on the internet and made a few dietary changes, no more fruit juice for breakfast and stopped having yoghurts in my packed lunch at work. And when I tested again it had dropped. Go forward several months a couple of personal issues along the way and when hba1c tested again I received a text advising me to pick up a prescription and make an appointment to see the practice nurse. So I’m now on metformin one tablet a day. The practise nurse gave me a pneumonia vaccine, tested my feet and suggested I look up paleo diet , and said there would be a referral to a diabetes clinic and an eye test. When I eventually got the clinic referral it was initially a 1-2-1 telephone consultation - turned out I was referred to the pre-diabetes healthier lifestyle one so they basically turned round and said I couldn’t be on that as I was already diabetic and referred back to the GPs. GP is now saying my blood sugar is under control and I don’t need referring. I feel I’ve been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes and not really been told anything or given any guidance , what help should I be expecting from my GP and any advice on how to ensure I get what help I need. Many thanks for taking the time to read this.

What was your latest HbA1c, if you don't mind saying?

Hello @Dduell , welcome to the forum and the club no one wants to join.
I don’t know for sure but I assume they did not cancel your referral to the pre diabetes prevention course when you crossed over the threshold.
However dint despair as other courses may be available in your area , they go by many different names, some are good others leave a lot to be desired, it really depends in those running the course, you are entitled to be referred to one whether or not you are well controlled

TBH I find quite a few GPs are not up to speed with diabetes it sounds to me that your nurse probably knows far more as she mentioned the Paleo diet rather than the usual eatwell or healthy eating plate that doesn’t help us lower our blood glucose levels.

I will be back in a mo with a link to the health checks you are entitled to .

We have lots of info about T2 and how to manage it on this thread

I suggest you start with

Then

If you decide to test to see how the various carbohydrates affect todo you can make informed choices rather than cut out things that you enjoy that you body copes well with
It’s likely that your Gp practice will not provide you a glucose meter sadly this is the norm unless they are very enlightened.
Many here use the SD Codefree meter, it’s the ongoing cost of the test strips you have to watch out for,it has the cheapest test test strips week ow of £8 for a pot of 50 other brands are over£15 .

In February 2019 my HbA1c was 45, In August 2019 it was 47

Hello @Dduell and welcome 🙂 - sorry to hear the treatment/advice you've been given so far has been so confusing and unhelpful. Lin has given you lots of good advice so I won't add to that. Just to say, 47 is still within the range for prediabetes (42-48) so it's strange that you've been put on Metformin and turned away from the healthier lifestyle consultation  With that HbA1c I'm surprised they're not letting you try to get it down by diet and exercise, rather than putting you onto meds.

Hello and welcome. 🙂
