Haven't been feeling great for a couple of days, mostly anxiety related, so went along to see the nurse practitioner today to get my blood pressure checked out. BIG mistake. Yes my blood pressure was high but she seemed more concerned by the fact that since last September I have lost 3 stone. I explained that I had been diagnosed diabetic with an HB1Ac of 48, which had gone down to 44 in March and that I had adapted to a way of eating that I felt I could sustain. The outcome is she has taken an armful of blood and is sending it off and I will get a call next Friday with the results. She wants to get to the bottom of this weight loss!!!! Meanwhile my blood pressure will stay high as I now have the worry of the pending results on top of my other problems 😡

You don't mention how high your BP was, hi Kentish Maid, if it's in a danger zone just book a gp appointment., these DNs will never, ever block my access to the Dr..

Fingers crossed for you though I'm a little surprised that she is focusing on the weight rather than congratulating you.

It wasn't in the danger zone, thankfully, and would probably have been lower if she hadn't wound me up about my weight 🙄 but thank you for your concern

Sounds to me like she’s just being extra cautious kentish maid. As the weight loss was intentional, it’s hard to know what she’s concerning herself about.
Your main issue at the moment is the anxiety which is probably fuelling the high b/p.
Can’t see any reason to worry about the blood tests. She’s just being ultra cautious because she’s detected a significant weight loss. Best wishes

I wouldn't say three stone over nine months is that alarming particularly since you've been working hard to achieve it...was she aware your were diabetic before you told her what your HbA1c was?...frustrating as it was like @Amigo says she is being extra cautious...\I have a blood pressure monitor I use at home...my GP is happy to accept my readings as he know my BP is elevated as soon as \I set foot in his surgery...thankfully it's not long to wait...good luck.

I took my BP readings with me when I went for my recent appointment with the nurse. I had been taking them every day for a week. Good job I did because the reading she took was sky high! She took it another 4 times and it gradually came down. She said it was probably just down to being in the surgery even though I didn't feel nervous.
Well done on your weight loss, that is amazing. Congratulations! x

She had my notes up on the screen in front of her, but rather worryingly asked me about my diabetic medication, and I haven't been prescribed any !!!

Not trying to steal your thunder, but I dropped 3 stone in as many months when I went low carb and felt fine. My BG was fine, better than I ever expected, great blood pressure readings, just a good job my surgery is not in the least interested in me since I went below diabetic range of Hba1c or there would be panic setting in by now.
I do get a wicked pleasure in seeing the expression on the faces of those taking my blood pressure - I normally have perfect numbers, but I can deliberately drop it by going into a meditative state if I don't like the way the nurse or doctor is treating me.

It must be really worrying that you’ve been congratulating yourself for losing weight, then someone comes along as suggests there might be another reason for it!

Well done though, because it sounds to me as if you did the right think letting them take all that blood. If there’s nothing comes of it, you can feel very happy that you successfully lost so much weight they decided to check for another cause of it!- and if something does come of it, at least you’ll know!

- if, btw you’re feeling really nervous about the results and they don’t come through, don’t worry until your next appointment - call them. In my experience, they’re very good at ringing you up if there’s bad news, but less good at letting you know if it’s all ok!

I do wish those in health care could just take a little time to explain more and reassure people about the actions they take. Well done on your weight loss, if I can get half that I’ll be over the moon! How is your weight now, are you under weight? Is that what might have concerned her? If not then I wouldn’t worry, put it down to how well you have done with the change of diet and be reassured that the blood tests will be an added bonus to confirm you are fine :D

Wow might have been an idea if she'd read your notes...or had a quick look at them while you were consulting with her...I no longer see the nurse at our practice...I saw her once & she was very dismissive & got quite shirty when I told her I tested regularly...she called me obsessive...I have told my GP I do not want to have reviews with her...he is fine with that.

A friend is currently monitoring his blood pressure and has offered to let me use his monitor for a few days, to put my mind at rest
KM keep a note of those readings ...it will put your mind at rest & I'm sure they will be much better than when you were with her...if so I'd show them to her...particularly if it was as you suspect white coat syndrome.

Think nurse is just being over cautious. I have had one or two incidental findings when they checked other bloods when I went for my hba1c. I had a low red blood cell count and have an iron deficiency for which I am being supplemented. My GP asked me if my weight loss was sudden and unexplained but I explained it was due to changing my diet to get out of pre-diabetes, which I did, but have now gone back into it again. He did accept that but checked my ESR too which came out normal.

My BMI is 23 and on the surgery scales I weighed 67 kilos, so comfortably in the 'normal' range.

I will do that. I have always had problems with 'white coat syndrome'
