Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
just joined up after having found out i was type 2 Diabetic ,5 days ago..so im hoping to find all i need on here...im a tad sick of salads at the moment haha....iv not a clue wot i can and cant eat...gonna nosey round some of these Threads....Paula xxx

Hi, Paula, & welcome to the forum.🙂 Did you have any symptoms when you are diagnosed? All I did was went to the docs with a sore tongue, they did a blood test, & hey presto! Type 2! That was a year ago now (my first Diaversary, as we call it🙂)
Right, now down to the important stuff. What we diabetics can't handle well is carbohydrates, not just sugar. So things such as potatoes, rice, pasta & bread will raise our blood glucose (BG) which we want to try to keep to a minimum. Things that are safe to eat include meat, fish, eggs & dairy (though be careful with milk as it contains lactose). Try to avoid so called 'low fat' items like yoghurts, as these contain more carbs.
Testing you BG is a good idea, though most doctors don't believe in it. By testing your BG, you will be able to see what foods you can tolerate. We are all different. Check first thing when waking up, before food & 2 hours after. You are looking for a rise of no more than 2-3 mmols/l (the measurement used in the UK).
You're in great hands on here. Lovely people.

Hi Mark ,Aww Thank u so much for replying..i went to docs cause i couldnt cope with being tired all the time,it got that bad i was getting confused and forgetful, thought i was insane..(most of my friends would agree with that anyway) i was Zombified..anyway came back type 2..but they say im not that bad...Blood sugar 10.2 and that HBAIC thing was 52 ?? is that bad?? got an appointment 3rd feb...but for 5 days now iv been good..but have i ? cause thought fruit was ok, its confusing, im a tiny weeny more awake but still feel soooo tired...xx

Welcome, it is all so confusing, but this forum is fantastic for help and support. I was diagnosed just over a week ago so don't have any advice as I am still finding my feet.

Welcome from a fellow T2, just 2 years in.

Welcome aboard Paula, it's a shocker at first but you'll soon be an old pro 🙂

Hi Paula, Welcome. It does come as a shock doesn't it, but the good thing is, Diabetes is a condition that can be managed well. Another good thing is you sought us out.
Listen you don't have to live on salads , unless of course you reallllly like them.
As has already been said, its carbohydrates our bodies can't handle too well.
Read the food labels on the back of the packs, completely ignore the , of which are sugars, sugar is just another carb, instead look at carbohydrates and you can work out , if it's worth it and or the carbs for the portion size you are going to have.
Mark in post 2 has already give a list of things to cut down/out. So I won't repeat them but, many of us have found some good substitutes. If you have one nearby, Many here have Lidl protein rolls , Bergen bread, nimble.
We often have to be careful with fruit, berries are often tolerated better, grapes are little sugar bombs. Fruit juice is packed full of sugar

Avoid things that say suitable for diabetics ( I believe that's illegal now but their still might be some knocking around) I don't do low fat , many here don't either as it's often more carbs than the ordinary version.

If you eat meat, it's perfectly fine for us, as are high meat content sausages and burgers
Eggs, cheese , fish, veg that grows above ground , some nuts are low carb too , I love walnuts, butter, cream to name but a few are actually good for us
Have I got your taste buds drooling yet ?

We have lots of good info and reading matter over on the pinned section of the the newbies forum

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Welcome Paul, and you have come to the right place. There are lots of very helpful people on here.

My main message is included above.
ALL Carbohydrates will raise you BG.

Testing will help you to find out what causes your own BG to rise quickly, more than others, ...
The more you know about your own BG the more you will be able to control the condition.

Be nice to your pancreas (it is where the insulin is made)

52 is not that bad - see scales here. I was 117 when diagnosed two months ago. As others have said "bye bye carbs" and your blood sugar will fall. You will great advice/support from the forum.

Welcome Paula, i was diagnosed in November 2016 with a reading of 115 so 52 is impressive for me!! The encouragement & support i've received on here for all sorts of questions which might seem crazy are always answered respectfully and thoughtfully. You'll soon find alternatives for every meal. Good luck with it you are amongst friends on here
