Does anyone here have any experience of a fungal nail, and treatment?

I have a fungal nail and my dr told me that there is no treatment he can give me (the pain on treatments don't work and the medication is too risky) so recommended laser treatment, which he told me was £40 and that I would probably only need 1 session, 3 at most. I had my first session yesterday but it was £66 and they have told me I will need at least 7 out of the 10 recommended sessions, something I simply cannot afford. Also it was SO painful! I only have 1 fungal nail but they treat all 10 nails, and go over them 3 times each, agony. Usually I have a high pain threshold but this is a burn rather than a pain and it was just awful.

I was wondering whether it would be worth seeing a chiropodist or someone else? Is there anyone I could get referred to on the NHS due to having diabetes?

Ouch. Sorry I have no knowledge of treatments. Could you just contact a chiropodist and at least ask for free advice. Lot of money to spend as well. Good luck

Hi Newbs that sounds awful. When I've had fungal nails before I've just let them grow out with no problems. I don't know if this helps?

I have not heard of this treatment. Sorry can't help I have no experience.

Hi. I don't know if you have tried a paint on treatment. My dad has a fungal nail and the podiatrist recommended one Called Loceryl, he's been using another cheaper brand and it seems to be working.

That's a lot of money to pay each time for laser treatment.

Paint on treatments only work if the infection is in the nail. If its in the nail bed they won't work because the treatment wont penetrate there. My OH has an infection in one nail, the GP said he could give him the tablet treatment but advised against it due to nasty side effects. He said that unless it was causing problems then advice is to just live with it, which OH has decided to do.

Thanks for your replies. I'm not sure if the infection is in the nail or nailbed tbh. I think I'll try to get an opinion from a podiatrist before continuing laser treatment. I have had to buy paint on solution as part of the laser treatment advice so that's added another £20. I just can't afford this treatment but want to get rid of the b****y fungal nail!

I would ask a chiropodist too. I had the start of one once and he painted some stuff on and it went away. My mum had one and just ignored it.

Today I saw a podiatrist. He was totally appalled that I had been for laser treatment as he said he doesn't even think my nail is fungal!! He said that it looks to him like it has been caused by trauma to the nail and he would just recommend conditioning it (and the rest seeing as they are now seriously dry following the laser). He also said that laser treatment for fungal nails is usually cold laser and painless so he is off to the clinic I had the laser treatment done at this afternoon to see what they are doing and if they should even be doing it. He is also going to have a word with my gp surgery as he thinks they are on commission and not putting patient care first. I am the 6th person he has seen that had been recommended laser, only the 2nd one daft enough to go through with it though. He has concerns that the extreme pain could have damaged many layers beneath my nails so has left me on an open appointment just in case, but all looking ok at the moment. He felt so sorry for me (and was so angered) that he only charged me half his usual appointment charge!

Oh newbs - how absolutely horrible for you, I cannot imagine how horrible it is, knowing what you now know.

But TG for the Good Guys.

That is immoral if they are getting commission and performing unnecessary - and potentially harmful! - treatments 😡 Good for the podiatrist, I hope that he succeeds in stopping it and bringing them to book! Hope the nail heals properly, under his care.

I think you should complain Newbs, I know he's going to investigate but that's appalling 😡 If they are on commission then that should be resolved quick smart.

I have trouble with my big toe nails all the time, they're not fungal just all bent out of shape and a bit odd because they interact with my shoes too much (overly mobile feet). i find the best routine with them is soaking in Epsom salt and putting oil on the nail every day, just keeps the nail supple and stops the nail getting thick and ugly looking. Cheap oil is fine, I use a nail oil largely because I like the smell but olive oil is good too. Hope they haven't done too much damage to the toe nails :(

Thanks for the tip, Kooks. Me and my mum have got the exact same problem with our (very ugly) toenails.🙄

I really feel for you, Newbs. We trust medics to do the best for us! Glad to hear you've got someone fighting your corner after the pain you've suffered.😱

Oh heck Newbs, that's horrible.
Did the GP recommend or mention that clinic to you.
I hope that the Podiatrist kicks up hell.
Also if you wish , you can complain too.
KookyCat is right about Olive oil, if you have any in, it's not only good for cooking and too much wax (oops my naughty ipad put wasps lol) in ears it's great for nails too.

I'm sure if you could get the wasps to stay still long enough to anoint them, it would be good for them as well...😛
:D:D:D

Thanks for the tips. I have got some oil now so will start treating the nail with that later. My GP did recommend the clinic, it is linked to the surgery as they are both called Three Spires and it mentions the clinic on the surgery website too.
