I have stopped taking my metformin and i did it because it was causing me to many side effects , i cant believe i did it because i can remember saying to someone not 2 weeks ago dont just come off pills without consulting your doctor,I could not see the diffirence really the pill did not bring my levels down sugnificantly or nothing like that, but anyway while picking up my strips this morning the lady at the chemist said ohh we have a note attatched to your script and its been highlighted that you are due a review by the doctor and it should have been the 14th , as i aint been getting my metformin i guess thats my fault as i'd of known , well i am worried to ring the doc incase i get some kind of rollocking which yes i guess i deserve , anyways can a doctor really make me take them if i dont want to?

Hi Steff, sounds like you are having a tough time. I found with my doctor he is bloody idiot, but he's not an ogre. See the doctor or see the nurse and have a chat. As the side effects are realy bothering you, it may be you can get some help for it. I always find I get more sense from the nurses at my doctor.

Although it is not a brilliant idea to come off the tablets, I sometimes leave them off for a day or two and am carefull what I eat as it gives my system a rest. It's a difficult call.

I hope you're feeling better soon.

Hope you are OK? Go to the dr's and tell him of side ettects etc and how you are feeling... were you refered to a councellor when you were feeling down, if so have a chat about this.

At the end of the day its your body and your choice.. just try to be wise and do whats right for you..

Hugs.. Julie xx

yes i got to wait upto 4 months and i only saw GP July i think, your right anyway if i dont call i cant talk to anyone about it , the nurse route may also be an idea as i do have issues with men docs , i prefer a woman

You're right steff, he can't, so please do call and get things back on track. I think we're all guilty of being a bit naughty at times, but you know that and the main thing is to try and get yourself on a regime that does not make you feel so bad. Is there a lady doctor at the practice? Most surgeries tryand make one available for those patients who prefer to see a doctor of the same sex. Let us know how things go and try not to worry. Who knows - the doctor may decide that you don't actually need the pills!🙂 Good luck!:D

As the doctor gets paid for looking after us as diabetics, he will welcome you with open arms. Someone suggested a lady doctor, so consider that if you fond a lady easier to talk. If I need a chat or to talk about my concerns I'll see the nurse as our lady doctor is only there one morning a fortnight and gets booked up very quickly.

I often find the nurses are easier to talk to and are more up on day to day things than the doctor, so if you just need to talk go see the nurse and have your review with her, she may have ideas the doctor doesn't, then you can see the doctor another time.

At the end of the day it's your call, and only you can sort this dilema out. The emotional blackmail bit is to tell you to think of your wonderful son and other half, people do it to me all the time.

I second what everyone else has said. 🙂

Don't be too hard on yourself. You stopped taking them for reasons you understand so relay these to the doc and see what he says.

I hope you get the support you need and deserve. Let us know how you get on. xx 🙂

Just remembered to take my tablet. Yesterday lunch time I didn't remeber till I had got home, and then it was nearly dinner time because the hubby was cooking and he's a good cook.

Hi Steff,

I bloody well hate Metformin with a passion. I felt really unwell taking them and I tried very hard to get used to the bleeders.

I told my doctor about it. She was very sympathetic and changed them to the slow release type. I'm sure your doctor won't be cross with you.

If you want to chat more about your feelings then feel free to PM me.

There are alternatives to Metformin. My wife used to take them for PCOS, but could not. The dr put her on a slow release version which she gets on with much better.

Have a chat with your GP and tell him about the side effects you are having. I'm sure they can come up with a solution.
