Hi Kay,

Dont think I have welcomed you to the forum yet so hi and a warm welcome from me.
I just wanted to say that sometimes on a forum things can get misconstrude as you cant see the persons face or how there expressing themselves, ive often got offended wrongly when someone had replied to me in a manner in which I took the wrong way...im a sensitive soul you see :D:D

Thank you so much MeanMom, that really does mean a lot! I hope your daughter/ son is OK. I see how much my bad health upsets my mum so see it from that side too.

Sending (((hugs))) back

Kay X

Well Kay there is a simple solution to this go to your GP and ask for a referal to a team that is proactive in helping you to understand your diabetes and teach you to manage it properly with the correct tools. Be it the correct insulin for you plus carb counting and or pump therapy.
You have to start kicking up to get what you need and you have to follow it through as no one else can do it for you. 🙂

That's your mission for Monday :D

Thank you and Hello! I hate email and texts for the same reason, I should be 94 not 24 LOL. It is so easy to read things the wrong way. I joined a forum years ago and left as felt I was being attacked or had a go at, I was only 16 so it scared the hell out of me! Slightly thicker skinned now, well I like to think so anyway :D

This is my 4th consultant LOL. Well I did see him when I was in my early teens but have gone back to him so 3rd really. I wish it was that easy, really I do. I do carb counting, write everything down that I eat. Did ask about changing consultants but you have to move to a different PCT area and the only one that would take me is 40 miles away which is just to far. Before I was fighting my mum was fighting she shouted at my consultant once in the waiting room as he hadn't listened to a word I had said.

Its been my mission everyday so far!

Kay,
you are allowed to see who you want. I see a consultant out of county.
40 miles is not far either esp if it gives you your life back.
What county do you live in?

It is when you don't drive and can't afford taxi's unfortunately. I live in Hertfordshire.

Sue, would INPUT not be the best place to start so that kay has a plan of action and a list of the proactive pumping consultants ? 🙂

I can appreciate how difficult it must be when everyone around is saying no way and you don't really know how to convince them that they're in the wrong.

There are in most county's hospital transport scemes for patients who have no transport. If you are on benefits you can also claim X amount back for fares as well.
What it boils down to though Kay is if you don't/wont help yourself then no one will be able to help you. :( Which is a dreadful shame as you are so young and should have your whole life in front of you.
Please note I am not having a go at you I am trying to help as is everyone else. 🙂

Did you know...
You can choose anywhere in England for an appointment with a specialist?

Hi Rob,
I have already given Kay the INPUT info. 🙂

At the risk of upsetting you when we had just begun to be friends:D -

I would suggest you move house...😱

(Seriously, I don't drive, I can't afford taxis all the time, my daughters D clinic is an hours bus ride away, we sometimes have to travel to Southampton to the specialist for her eyes, it is a two hour coach trip each way for us. Please please please get the right person to help you look after your diabetes and other health issues. You deserve it)

More (((hugs))

Yes I know. I just wondered if it would be better for her to have one mission to start with and then branch out from there. They may be able to pont her straight to a better place than having to try and persuade a less than co-operative GP to refer her to somewhere else.🙂

(sorry to speak as if you're not in the room, koko 🙄)

Well, this gets more and more as they close hospital departments doesn't it? If you live rurally there's never been reliable transport.

Karen Flutterby for instance - OK certain services are still at Kiddermnister or the consultant comes to Kidder hosp once every so often, but if she breaks a bone, it's Worcester hosp. Friend's wife in Kidder was stuck for transport to visit him when he broke summat, as she doesn't drive. And for me to get to the hosp which serves the greater Coventry area which my GP surgery invariably refers people to - by own car is around half an hour, or public transport is at least 1hr 40min trip both ways, if both buses are on time. If they referred me locally to Nuneaton hosp it's still half an hour by bus, or allow 20 mins by car. However I prefer to go to the D clinic at Rugby hosp cos they are nicer, and that would take me at least 2 hours + each way - bus into Cov, 20 minute walk to train station, train to Rugby then taxi from there to the hosp. Coming back I'd walk back into Rugby (20 mins, uphill) then have a bodge round the shops then either walk or taxi to the train station, which is not that near the town centre, then another 20mins walk off the train to the bus station in Cov, and back home. I'd have to allow most of a day for it really.

But I'd still prefer to go there because they are the puppy's privates, and I'm worth the investment ! - both monetarily and time-wise.

As it is, with a bit of luck, luckily I have use of a car most days, and the extra petrol is made up for by cheaper and easier parking at Rugby, plus I get a far, far better service from the NHS personnel there.

Yes I'm an OAP so the first and last legs are nominally free as long as I don't clash with a rush-hour, but otherwise none of it would be - and who gets the luxury of picking a time? Not me for sure .....

It is very difficult! And very frustrating!

Funny you should say about making a list of proactive pumping consultants I that's exactly what I am going to do.
One minor problem had a look on INPUT there are no Pump Clinic in Hertfordshire! And none close enough all way to far away. Will have to go back to the drawing board and look at individual consultants

Sue I don't qualify for any of that. And I DO HELP MYSELF more than most people have to and more than I am willing to share on here.
Your may not see it as having a go at me but you are making assumptions that are unfair when you have no idea what goes on in peoples lives. I came on here for support and advise and to maybe connect with other diabetics not to have to constantly explain myself.
I am sorry but in my eyes you are being very unfair

Hi Meanmom, you haven't upset me at all. I am lucky my clinic is relatively close only a 10 - 15 minute bus ride away but I'm the same as you for the eye clinic I chose that one as it has a very good reputation. The weird thing is when I was diagnosed my mum heard that the consultant I see now was the guy to see, he was the clinical lead for the local PCT, his since retired from that post to do more teaching at a couple of local universities. Now I am not so sure about him sometimes he can be very good but sometimes he just seems to be quoting text books verbatim. Like I say it took me years to get anyone to listen about my hormones yet everyone else I mentioned it too my pharmacist, optician, house Dr's in A&E and a couple of GP's have all said the same thing hormones will affect your diabetes. I had 4 periods in a 6 week (er well 🙄) period a couple of months ago, god knows how I manged not to end up in hospital! Actually god knows how I have managed to stay out of hospital for the last few years, only been in with food poisoning over the past 4 years! And had flu at the beginning of the year not even the flu jab worked for me! It is hard bleedin' work, some nights when its bad I will sleep on the sofa so I wake up to do a BM to make sure I am not going high and will do this for many nights in a row then stay up all day only getting a nap here and there if I am just too tired.
Up at the moment after a night hypo and can't get back to sleep, wonderful pounding headache too! And having a rather strong bacon craving!! 😱

Speaking of hospital departments closing, we lost all of our Hospital a couple of years ago I think the only thing left is some outpatients and the path lab. If we need to go to A&E now the only hospital is about 15 miles away down a a very narrow Victorian street next door to a large and regularly used football stadium! All quick roads to the hospital are blocked off when there's a Football or rugby match on! Has taken some people an hour by ambulance and 2 hours by car to get there on these day.
The last time I changed consultants I also changed clinics (well kind of there all interlinked around here, same nurses, some of the same consultants) the clinic I am at now is yes much nicer, much quicker and much less crowded! Went from sitting waiting in queue for 2 hours to being seen within 30 minutes, was rather dumbfounded when I first went considering both clinics are equal distances either side from my house and transport links are good to both. The only thing I can think of why they don't spread the workload is the new clinic (well newish to me) is in a "fashionable", wealthy area and the other in an area that's known for being a bit of a dive and has very large oil depot explosions! 😉 And that morning my BM went from 6.9 10 minutes before the explosion to 30.0 30 minutes after the explosion, we thought the house was coming down!

That's OK Rob and it sounds like you have met my GP somewhere! LOL

I will be speaking with consultant first before I go guns blazing to my GP. I have an appointment in Jan with him so its not too long to wait. I will be printing off as much info that I can find about the pump and Dia Port and the pro's and con's so I am armed to the hilt with facts I will not leave the room until he has heard me out. I will wait to see what his response is before I decide what to do next.

I made no assumptions what so ever. 😡
All I have done is spent MY time finding info for YOUR benefit with the hope that YOU can move forward.
Any suggestion/ideas though are thrown straight back at anyone and everyone :(

Unless you explain what is going on how do you expect people to help you?
I am sorry but in my eyes you are being very unfair.

It is when you don't drive and can't afford taxi's unfortunately. I live in Hertfordshire.

OK. Hertfordshire is a big county - people from Royston in the north regard Addenbrookes in Cambridge as their local hospital, whereas the south of the county eg Cheshunt is virtually part of London; Baldock, Letchworth, Hitchin, Stevenage are all near to Luton & Dunstable; Welwyn Garden City, Hertford, Hatfield and St Albans are all within reach of Watford.

Transport is an issue, but with a combination of public transport eg http://www.transportdirect.info/ and use of a bike for short distances eg http://welwyngardencity.cyclestreets.net/ or other Cyclestreet hompages linked from http://www.cyclestreets.net/area/ Some buses DO allow you to take a bike onboard - just yesterday, I travelled between Cambridge & Bedford return on X5, and saw at least 2 regular bikes [not folding bikes] in the hold each way.

Most hospitals do have travel pages on their websites with advice about transport links - and some have travel co-ordinators on the end of phone or email.

Hope some of this helps you find a hospital you can reach - the nearest isn't always the easiest nor quickest to reach.
