I've been watching the thread - and I wonder why you aren't pumping?

And yes you can pump with animal insulin!

PS - Wockhardt make the insulin.

Post code lottery I'm afraid! They don't support the cost round here been trying to get a pump for years!

There was a big thing around here with notices up at the clinic saying they were no longer going to be supplying animal insulin and anyone on it would have to change to synthetic maybe they decided not to go ahead. I remember thinking that was unfair to people on animal insulin that it worked for. I will ask my diabetes nurse but they've always kind of shied away from animal insulin.
I also imagine it being more stable maybe that's just my strange mind :D but thinking if it works for animals its get to be better than man made.

Ooh yes I had some luck with the strips finally! My GP has agreed to add another 2 boxes to my script for a month so am getting 5 boxes now and I told her I would see how that goes. Will still be talking to my MP. I spoke to my pharmacist yesterday he told me that only 2 out 100 will get more strips which I think is terrible he was already fighting on behalf of a guy who had had the same think happen, apparently a really sporty guy with good control but does lots of things like bike riding, mountain climbing etc.. who also needs to test a lot otherwise he wouldn't be able to do those things. Your damned if you and damned if you don't! 😡

I have heard of many health care profesionals actualy lying to patients by telling the stuff doesn't exist 😡 What it boils down to though is ignorance on how it works mainly because they are to young to remember it or to lazey to go find out.

Has a pump been discussed with or by your team?

In that case contact INPUT http://www.input.me.uk/

They are not allowed to say no due to cost if you need a pump and fit the guidelines then you have a pump.

Sue is a bit of a straight talker she's not attacking but is actually trying to help..

A lot of the things you are saying are pretty Atypical things said by diabetics who are allergic to human insulins..

Your consultant can prescribe it for you as it's in the BFN book (the list of medication/treatments for the NHS) s/he dependant on age either haven't used it with a patient or not for a long while has it's been out of favour.. So it means that they've gonna have to do a 'look' up on it..

But many people do find dramatic difference with their control, and most also successfully use it with MDI or insulin pump therapy regime's... The only real difference is the slight difference in the timing of injecting when eating and/or correcting...

If your consultant says sorry can't, then ask your consultant to be referred to another consultant who can!

Apart from a pump that would whether your are on human or animal insulin which would give you the ability to flick from one lot of delivery needs to the next every day..

There is on other bit of kit that I have known to be used with good success with a couple of diabetics who have major allergic problems with both Human and Animal insulin and that the Dia Port, an implant that insulin is either injected into or a insulin pump is attached to... This takes the insulin near to where naturally produce insulin enters the blood stream..

The benefit of this is that less insulin is required, it doesn't sit in fat tissue to flare or irritate an allergy to insulin so the patient has a lot better time of it all.

That doesn't surprise me. It makes my blood boil 😡! My consultants certainly been around enough think he might be close to retiring but the nurse probably haven't they don't seem much older than me and to be honest there not that useful, at getting things through to the consultant yes but on insulin units etc there pretty useless. They seem to know a lot about type 2 but not an awful lot about type 1. I try not to blame that on them but I guess it is up to them to do the research.

Yes have spoke to my consultant and previous consultants about the pump some have said it would be a good idea for me others have said there not to sure. But one thing they all agree on is there is no funding for it round here, if I could afford it I would get one tomorrow. It drives me up the wall! 😡

I now know she wasn't attacking me and I know I flow of the handle a bit and I apologised for thinking that. My mother keeps telling me I got out of the wrong side of the bed this morning!

Intolorence to insulin's and building up resistance are things that have been mentioned. I will certainly ask about Dia Port, never heard of it. But as the pump isn't funded I doubt that is either.

Ah huh I didn't no that, they keep telling me its the cost! And everything I read it on it talks about postcode lottery. Well that's some ammunition to have for my next appointment! Thank you!
 
Concerning pump funding

I assume that you live in either England or Wales (Scotland comes under a different set of regulations).. The PCT doesn't have much say about the funding, as if you fit the NICE criteria and your consultant says you need a pump then the PCT has no option but to fund the pump, if they refuse funding they are actually breaking the law...

If you'll on the English side of the border then I suggest that you contact input here input.me.uk via their website they are very good at helping individuals with suborn consultants/PCT's who are trying avoidance tactics where pump concerned..

Scotland does have a similar organisation, but can't think of it off the top of my head, hopefully one of the Scots will come along a fill this information in..

Yes I am in England. Yes Sue also gave me the input.me.uk link I will be contacting them. It does seem my consultant and nurses and GP in fact have lied about the funding thing. If I should have been able to get the pump for all this time I will be very very angry with my team 😡!

I'm half Scottish maybe I can skip the border if its easier :D LOL.
 
Yeah but No but Alan - see, the Scots get free parking at hospitals apparently. That means when their legs drop off and they need dialysis, they can park. So that must make it OK, mustn't it?

Turning back to the case in hand; what happens do you suppose, koko when me, Sue, Mike, Phil etc all move into your house to live with you and so register with your GP and we need help with our diabetes - which at the moment is usually a phone call to our DSN or whichever expert we currently use - where - pray - do we go?

I've heard about sufferers being in denial of their diabetes, but not whole hospital departments!

With an,almost,teenager with D, I have an idea of the havoc hormones play with sugar levels-( basically think of a number some days:() but it sounds like it's nothing compared to what you have to go through:(

Thank you so much MeanMom, that really does mean a lot! I hope your daughter/ son is OK. I see how much my bad health upsets my mum so see it from that side too.
