Relationship to Diabetes
Type 2
Hello
I’m new and I’m really grateful for the support info and guidance I hope to get and I don’t know much about T2 diabetic but happy to help if I can

Hi Welcome to the forum.
You say you don't know much about Type 2 so I suggest you have a look at the learning zone (orange tab at the top) to get a better understanding.
Everybody things it is all about sugar but it is ALL carbohydrates that convert to glucose that will increase your blood glucose levels of your body cannot cope with the amount you are having in your diet. It is therefore important to look at that aspect of you diet with a view to cutting out some things and reducing portions of others.
Depending on how far into the diabetic zone you are will determine how much you need to do. What was your HbA1C that has given you the diagnosis, it will be a number over 48mmol/mol which is the threshold.
Many people find success with a low carb, less than 130g per day dietary regime but there are also other approaches.
It will also depend if you need to lose weight, if so doing that will also help with blood glucose management. Any exercise you can do will also be beneficial.

That’s so good thank you. Not a clue about HBa1c was told it was HIGH should have seen the Nurse but didn’t happen so I’m trying to help myself …. Oh low carb yes thanks and I do need to lose a couple of stone
Thanks again

I found it easy to lose2 stone with a low carb 'way of eating' not a diet since I probably ate more calories (in protein and fat) than I did before. Of course it also put my Type 2 into remission but perhaps surprisingly it usually improves Triglycerides and HDL cholesterol and even Blood Pressure should you need that.

It is important to find out what the HbA1C is as you don't know what your starting point is and gives you a good indication of how much you need to reduce your carbohydrates, do ring then to ask and be insistent. I would assume it was not desperately high as you don't mention being given and medication which is good as you should be given the opportunity to try by dietary changes first.

Thanks Ever so much not a clue about ‘what you say it improves’ I’m currently reading lots

That puts a different complexion on advice about low carb as depending on what insulin you are taking and how much you will still need to be eating some carbs to match any insulin doses.
You must ask what your carb intake needs to be for the insulin regime you will be using and also you should have hypo treatment available at all times. So jelly babies or 150ml cans of full fat coke or glucose tabs. You must also have a monitor and test strips to be able to test your glucose levels.
If you have not got those things then I would be reluctant to start on any insulin.
I am puzzled that insulin has been the first port of call rather than some of the oral medications and dietary changes which are normally tried first. Did they explain that to you?

I have no experience of insulin so have tagged a couple of the experiences insulin users for comment @rebrascora, @Inka

Sadly no one was available I was horrified when I was handed a bag of meds and told to read up and someone will see me soon …. I’ve not started anything at all. I’ve lots 4 stone BMI is better but my ‘levels’ are dangerously high apparently….. I’m going to do nothing until I’ve seen a diabetic professional thank you

I would advise that until you get advice about the insulin situation your 'high HbA1C' means that you should avoiding all potatoes, cereals, rice, pasta, pastry, bread, cakes fruit juice and tropical fruit. That will guarantee that you will be eating low carb during that time. I have no idea what you normally eat, but meat, fish, eggs , cheese cream, full-fat yogurt, tree nuts and berries are OK as are above ground vegetables.
Once you start taking insulin then you will probably be advised to eat more carbohydrates. But un-medicated and with a 'high' HbA1C it's not worth risking eating like a non-diabetic healthy person would.

Possibly you should completely ignore the "straight onto low carb high fat" posters if you are just starting insulin.
Please wait until you get advice from the people on here who are on insulin, and can sort you out correctly.
It's also a consideration are you possibly type 1, if you have lost 4 stone recently.
Have you been tested for that?

Hi @Disbelief1959 I hope you don't feel you are getting conflicting advise but in your first post you didn't mention anything about insulin and therefore the initial responses would not have taken that into consideration.
I hope you manage to talk to your GP or nurse today and find out what they suggest.
If you then come back with those details particularly what insulin and dose and when and any dietary advise you are given then you will get more appropriate advice for your situation.

That's the danger of jumping in feet first with the same advice to every new poster.
A timely lesson to ask questions first, and tailor the advice, and to remember new posters don't always know what affects diabetes, but we certainly do.

Hello
I’m new and I’m really grateful for the support info and guidance I hope to get and I don’t know much about T2 diabetic but happy to help if I can

Hope you get back to see the doctor or nurse, and post back up where there are many good posters on here who will be doing the same regime, and will be more than happy to point you in the right direction.

good luck with the phonecalls today @Disbelief1959

Yes that is pretty high so no wonder you have been given a whole raft of medications. It would help if you have any questions to be specific about what you are taking so peole can give appropriate advice.
I hope you have been given instructions about what to take when and any dietary advise to get you started on such a cocktail of meds.
