I was diagnosed type 2 in July and then possible LADA after a hospital stay in October. I am not doing well at remembering to test and inject and take metformin and am worried I will be told off at my first appointment with the DSN that I have been waiting on for months

Don't worry Tanya, you're not on trial! The DSN is there to help you, not judge you 🙂 If you're having problems with remembering to take your medication, say so - you're not the first to have problems like this and the DSN should understand and try to find ways to help 🙂 What sort of problems are you having, perhaps we can help with suggestions 🙂

Thank you for responding 🙂 When I left hospital I was told to test glucose for certain meals depending on th4 day but I seem to have fallen out of the habit and am not testing as much as I should before eating. I also sit down to eat something and then realise that I haven't injected! That plus I am still not eating as healthily as I should be

Oh and most times i forget to take metformin with my meals! I feel so embarassed. I consider myself a responsible person normally so I don't understand why I am being careless. It's almost like I'm in denial

Being in denial is not unusual, Tanya. This is a big thing and it's quite natural to have a feeling/subconscious hope that it's not really happening. With diabetes there can sometimes appear to be little consequence for having the condition as it can be a slow and insidious thing :( However, the thing to bear in mind is that if you do take charge and start looking after things then it can be controlled very well - and it's a lot easier on the conscience to take the few steps you need to make rather than worrying and feeling guilty 🙂 Please don't feel embarrassed, it's something many people feel, you just need help to change how you approach it 🙂

Hi Tanya welcome to the forum. Sorry to read youre having problems and please dont feel embarrassed. It is not unusual to be in denial so please don't fret, you're not alone. It takes most of us a little while to get into the habit of testing before meals and 2hrs post meals. You are not being careless Tanya. Diabetes is still new to you but I can assure you that it will all become 2nd nature before you know it, honest. It is a condition that can easily be managed. To help you remember to take your metformin medication with or immediately after you've eaten why not invest in tablet dispensers ~ photo attached. Place your metformin in a 7day dispenser and remember to place the dispenser on the table with a glass of water at the same time you set your cutlery. I use tablet dispensers every day because I have a memory like a sieve!!

Why not set an alarm, say on your mobile phone or clock to remind you to inject when you need to until you become accustomed to it.

Get yourself a copy of the book Type 2 Diabetes: The First Year by Gretchen Becker. She's type 2 and educated herself re Diabetes when she was dx (diagnosed) in 1996. You will find it very useful.

Yiu will find that link and more information in the following link:~

When you have your appointment with your DSN I would suggest that you discuss with her/him any concerns you have. They are there to help you ~ not to reprimand you. Do please stay in touch as to your progress. You can come back here to ask as many questions as you wish or need to ~ there is a wealth of knowledge and experience here and we'll help you as best we can. Take care and good luck. x
