I have booked myself onto the 5k B'ham Fun Run, August 19th, but where do I start....😱

I've got myself 8 months to get to a stage where I'd like to run the 5k but if I have to walk part way that's ok... I do try and walk 10,000 steps a day or spend 30mins in my mini-gym to build up my fitness but don't know where to start...

Any advice would be warmly welcome

P.S. Swimming lessons start again on Thursday...🙄

Start off by running as far as you can. Walk back.

Next day (or two days after if you are suffering) run to the same point. Next time, or the time after, make yourself go to the next landmark - tree, lamp-post, whatever.

And just build up. Gradually.

I did that yonks ago with a 4k Hyde Park funrun, by race day I could do it in 20 mins except there were so many people on the run it actually took nearer 30 to get past the finishing line and a further 10 to get out of the slalom to funnel you back into the park. Where I collapsed for half an hour under a tree plied with Coke! Oh and sharpen your elbows to get as near to the front as you can at the start because otherwise it's far too hot as you aren't running into clear air.

If I could do it - smoking! - you certainly can, mate!

My friend (in her 50's) was trained up by her daughter, a serious jogger. I can't remember the exact details now but it was something like run 1 minute, walk 2 mins, run 1 minute, walk 2 mins for an overall 15 mins first few days, then gradually up the running time to 1.5 mins, then start cutting the walking down to 1.5 mins, then eventually run 2 mins, walk 1 min, until you can run continuously for a while. Then it's all about stamina and building up the length of time you can run.

Well done you, fantastic that you have set yourself a target. Good luck.

Just put your trainers on and go. Maybe go to the end of the street first, then to the end of the street and back , then round the block. Get some good running trainers too.
It is amazing how the distance soon increases.

I too did a 5k last year for charity from never running before in my life. I managed it in 36 minutes and will now be doing the same again this year - and maybe even a 10k if I can!

My not so helpful answer would be ........ Birmingham?

Andy 🙄🙂

Cheeky..🙄whatever do you mean...Birmingham is a lovely place...

There's a book about running for beginners which gives you a really good plan for building up! It's by Zest magazine and called Running Made Easy
