I am 50 years of age and obese :( when i think about it, that is being overweight as a child and now at the obese stage for all my life and now that i have diabetes, it has given me the kick up the backside that i needed to change my lifestyle which i have done since diagnosis in 2009. It is going to take me months for me to lose the weight that i need to get off and get into the 'healthy' bracket which should lower everything i need to get lowered to become officially 'healthy' ie BP, cholesterol, body fat, weight etc etc but when i think about it, it is involving a lot of dedication and hard work and will involve months to get where i want to be so it just shows how it takes a lifetime to do the damage and not that quick a fix to undo the damage but i'm sure it will be worth it but i sometimes feel quite cross with myself for even getting to this stage with my health and body but i must look on the positive side and think 'better late than never' i suppose.

I don't think you should beat yourself up. I spend a lot of time doing that and it gets me precisely nowhere!

I am viewing myself as a 'project' - I have got myself into this mess but i am worth getting out of it. So a bit of tough love but also recognition, as you say, that improvement will take time and energy, both of which we have!

I am using My Fitness Pal now, started 2 weeks ago and have lost 6lbs so far, I find that logging in food and activity really helps keep me focused.

I'm with you Carina, we can both do this, it's just a case of getting down to it and being consistent. We are booking a holiday to Thailand next year and there is NO WAY I am going to be able to cope with the heat at my current weight.

So, let's cheer each other on, who knows what could be achieved in even a few weeks, never mind months!

Two very positive posts 🙂 Hope and I'm sure things will go well for you.

Every action towards increasing fitness, getting / maintaining a healthy weight etc is a success. And it can be fun on the way - for me, exercise outdoors is always best, but I know it's not the same for everyone, especially in rain / cold / dark conditions.

Definitely agree about remembering successes & achievements over weeks, months, years.

It's over a year since a serious knee injury in July 2012, during which I could hardly walk, certainly not run, but could cycle, and things only started to improve after NHS MRI, arthroscopy and physiotherapy in Dec 2011 / Jan 2012. Finally managed first walk over 2 miles in Lakes in June, walked around 8 miles week before last, first run / walk session last week, and first deep water running session this morning (wore lifejacket in open air pool). I managed a few geocaches during the year, and aim to restart orienteering soon. Help and encouragement has come from many sources - partner, family, friends, many from physio / sports medicine / adventure racing / triathlon / coaching etc.
