ok, so being new to T2D I'm struggling with drinks.

I've never drunk full fat cola anyway, but can I still drink Coke Zero etc?

Can I drink milk (have already switched to skimmed) but are there limits in how much I can drink.

I do drink a fair amount of water, but do like to mix it up.

Is robinsons 'no added sugar' fruit juice ok or is that made from concentrate so should be avoided?

How about tea (don't have sugar so that's no problem) is tea okay?

Coke Zero has no sugar, so that's fine. No added sugar fruit squashes usually contain small amounts of sugar from their fruit content, but unless you're drinking litres every day, not enough to worry about.
No worries with tea or coffee, unless you add sugar. Milk does contain some sugar, relatively more in lower fat varieties, but not really enough to worry about, unless drinking lots.

Always found that if making a coffee at home is fine as I use the Skimmed Milk...

Going to somewhere like costa for example and having a latte will make me high as the milk has a high sugar, the believe they use the Blue Topped Milk unless you ask for a "skinny" version.

I stick to my Tassimo costa American at home and add a splash of milk and no sugar! Works a treat!!

There's no real difference in sugar content between skimmed and full fat milk, it's like 1g per 100ml difference. An Americano with a splash of milk though is a totally different drink to a latte - a latte is about half milk, so the reason you get a different result is because of the overall milk content, not the type of milk.

Deus, yes totally understand about the latte being half milk etc etc..

Never knew about the difference in the milk in sugar! Hardly seems worth it!

There's not a lot of carbs in milk, particularly considering how little you add to a drink or cereal.
Whole milk - 4.6g carbs per 100g
Semi-skimmed - 4.7g
Semi-skimmed UHT - 4.9g
Source - CoFID 2015

The reason they tell you to drink skimmed is for the same mistaken reason they tell everyone they should eat low-fat anything - their complete erroneous obsession that dietary fats in the food we eat - cause higher blood cholesterol.

They do NOT ! Enjoy your prawns and avocado, with full fat mayonnaise ...... washed down with Jersey (Gold Top) milk.

Just not if you need to lose a fair bit of weight.

I never buy anything that says low fat because I'd rather have less and enjoy it. I don't have a weight problem so I am very fortunate 🙂 My cholesterol is under 4 so I think that is acceptable. It is possible to buy lactose free milk and it is nice

I drink skimmed milk, have done for many years before I was diagnosed, but actually full-fat milk may be a better option because the fat will slow the digestion. I get through nearly a pint a day in tea and coffee, but never really notice any specific impact from it spread over a long time - not like drinking a glass of milk would probably affect me.

Fruit teas are nice, plus I drink quite a bit of Robinson's no sugar added squash 🙂

Hi Nig31Mac
All of those options are fine, Diet Coke, Coke Zero etc are sugar free and sugar is where the carbohydrate comes from, tea should be fine as should milk if you like drinking it. I wouldn't have skimmmed milk if you threatened me at gunpoint but that's just personal preference 🙂, although a large glass would push my blood sugar up a bit since I seem to be quite sensitive to it, full fat milk has less impact than semi skimmed for me probably because the fat makes it a bit harder to absorb. I don't drink cordial so I can't comment on that but I think lots of people drink no added sugar cordial without issue. My tipple of choice is San pellegrino sparkling water I love that stuff :D, can't abide still water and I don't really like fizzy pop so I have no idea why fizzy water is so appealing 🙄 but it absolutely is!

Thanks guys. Never knew skimmed milk was loaded with carbs, so will try and take a swerve on that. (Well not too much of it anyway)

I do drink a lot during the day, try and mix it up so one water, one fruit juice (robinsons no sugar) and it sounds like the Coke Zero etc is fine 🙂

Thanks again!!

Skimmed milk isn't loaded with carbs at all. It has about 5g per 100ml. You'd need to drink a litre of the stuff to end up having the same amount of carbs as a big sandwich.

We must be related, KookyCat. I can't abide skimmed milk, and only drink fizzy water🙂 . And don't get me started on milk substitutes...

We must be related too Mike :D

I really don't like water unless it's ice cold with ice, but much prefer 'no added sugar' cordial or diet pop. Recently for breakfast, I've been having Tesco cherry juice. 100ml is 4.3g carb & I only have 100ml & doesn't affect my BG. Thought it might do me good.:D

I enjoy Lilt zero

I drink sugar free irn bru or fizzy strathmore flavoured water unfortunately don't do the zero drinks as had an allergic reaction to coke zero when it first came out covered from ankles to neck in a rash was not nice haha 🙂 x
