Hi I have just joined, my son has been diagnosed with type 1 just 2 weeks ago. He’s 3. So allvwry new and some what scary.
I have s question- he has a temperature can I give calpol? I don’t have the box any more and I can’t seem to find anything online.

Hi @Tanya78 , Welcome to the forum, Sorry to hear your little lad is poorly so soon after joining our select club.
I can’t help much with the Calpol, others here will be able to. The only advise I can suggest is to speak to the Pharmacist at your chemist. They are the experts on medications. I’ve looked online but can’t find the carbohydrate content.

As your lad is newly diagnosed and now ill, the very best thing you can do is contact his Diabetes nurse for advise. Any illness or injury can affect our BG (blood glucose) levels dramatically, they can and do go up, down and round the houses just to keep us on our toes 😡 so you’re probably going to be doing a lot of firefighting with his BGs and as you’re probably on a steep learning curve yourself, you not only need advise but reassurance too.

Others who have more knowledge than I (I’m T2) will be along later.
Feel free to ask questions and please let us know how you get on.

Thank you so much for your words.
Yes it’s been a very quick learning. My boy was rushed in with ketones acitocis and we are very lucky he is here.
I will no doubt be on here continually asking questions as I’m find this all so overwhelming.

You must have been terrified .
We have quite a few parents on here who will know only too well what you’re going through who hopefully will be along soon. For another reason I know only too well what it can be like when you have responsibility for another persons health and well-being. I think you’ll find your lad will amaze you at how well he will cope.

Apart from the wealth of knowledge people have on here which we readily share, we also have a great forum with links, reading and suggested books. I know your up to your eyes with it all now , esp as your lad is poorly but when you’re ready , head over to the thread called, Useful links for people new to diabetes , scroll to the T1 section.

For future reference you’ll find it on the pinned area of the Newbies say hello here forum.

That is what we are here for. Just come on and ask, or if you want a rant we are here for that too. It is a very steep learning curve but it definitely gets easier. Getting levels to settle at the start takes time, and as others have said is made harder if your child then gets ill. That is what your Diabetes team is there for and they will want to help, so don’t be afraid to ask.

There are parents who have been in your position who can also help. If you want to you could look at the thread specifically for parents.

Yes he can have Calpol - it's better if it's the sugar free one of course, although if you happen to have the sugary one I don't think the amount in one small spoonful will matter. Just keep a close eye on his blood sugars, but you need to do that anyway when they are ill. As you are so new to all this make sure you keep in touch with the medical team and they will help you. Hope he gets better soon, diabetes is tough enough anyway, being ill on top of that just adds more complications! Although it can be managed, it's just a bit harder work, it all feels really scary now but you do get used to it, honest 🙂
