Hi guys,

seem to have ended up not coming on here again for a couple of weeks...carb-counting and life just seems to take up so much time!

I've now finished my BERTIE course, and it was great. would highly recommend any T1s who haven't been on one, get nagging their diabetes team to go on one. It is hard work as you are learning all over again, but it's worth it.

My HBA1c has dropped from 9.8% to 8% (a year ago), then this month, to 7.4% so I'm really, really pleased. I'm now actually within their recommended guidelines!!

I've also had my flu jab done - that was on Friday, and touch wood, no high bgs yet or any side affects...even my arm is not sore anymore already!

On Friday I went to my GP nurse and she gave me my 'new patient screening'. She said that my blood test kit was old, and gave me 2 new ones. I was using the One Touch Ultra, and now she's given my Bayer Contour...haven't started using the new one yet, but have just used my last test strip on my last one! Any one got any comments on this? Is the new one better than my old one? I quite liked my One Touch one, nice a small and just didn't have any complaints. New one is bigger and I'm a bit anxious of starting to use something that takes up even more space....is it really that much better?

thanks for listening, and hope all you wonderful D people are doing well :D

Hi you seem to be doing all the right things, well done, onwards and upwards:D I do like the meters I have, especially the Contour as it only takes 5 seconds 🙂 it's easy to use and i have had no problems with my one. I hope it goes well with the new meter. Best wishes Sheena

Hi Katie,
well done on your A1c reduction.
As to your meter yep it's best to replace every 2 years, so if you would like another one touch meter give lifescan a ring they will send you out a couple of one touch ultra2's free of charge. 🙂

I too am still in love with BERTIE (altho mine - CARBS 4 1 - wasn't actually 'him' but all the educators were trained by BDEC and they approved the course etc)

But much as he helped you - YOU had to do the work - well done that woman!

Onwards and downwards - now, it can be done!

Well done on the great HbA1c reduction! 🙂

Hey Katie you wont believe this but i viewed your profile yesterday as i was wondering how you were an noticed you had not been on since middle of OCt and poof you appear lol

Great news on your hb reduction x

You probably just need a bit more practice. :D

Hi Katie,

Good to see yoy posting. I'm glad you enjoyed the BERTIE course and a big well done on your HbA1c. Onward and downward! XXXXX

I'd have liked your actual tea better than the one you wished for, Steff - what a treat, crab!

thanks everyone for all your support and encouragement 🙂

I am very pleased with my reduced HBA1c, just no idea how I really achieved it lol

Am struggling a little at the moment to keep up the carb counting and insulin ratios now I am not going back to the hospital each week, but I know I need to do it, so I just need to push myself....it's so easy to get back into the 'oh I'll just inject x amount!'

haha Steff, that is funny....it must have been you that drew me back yesterday!! on a different note, do you have the highest number of posts on this forum??? I'm always amazed. I feel I do loads (or was) but the number of posts I've done doesn't feel high enough lol

Love you guys!!!

The level of commitment to counting the carbs and all that comes with it will go from good to less good to bad then back to good again, that's normal, and OK, were only human, but now you have the skills to take a step back and see what you need to do.............congratulations on graduating from BERTIE and for the reduced HbA1c............:D

I never had a prob with the carb counting per se - although I freely admit I know an awful lot more now than I did way back when we had portions/exchanges/lines - it was the dose adjustment I was clueless about before I met Daffers and Bert - but I think what I found soon after my course was, I stopped writing it down ....

Then discovered my BG went squiffy again. So reinstated it and then got blase again.

And again and again and again until I reached a truce ..... I write it all (nearly all, anyway!) down but only really study it in depth, once a week, to try and spot any patterns. Obviously I still do my correction jabs and all that, and take action when summat's obviously awry but that ratio is just one of the things I might need to tweak at any time, just like everything else .......

I will use this or the other forum as my 'classmates' for their opinions but my readings would be on a forum post, not on an acetate ......

you guys rock! thanks so much for your support, it's so nice to hear others struggle with it all as well....sometimes you get disillusioned that everyone else can do it all in their sleep. 😎

Don't get disillusioned we're only human:D You will have good days and bad days. Enjoy the good days and learn from the bad days. Be proud of yourself for the self discipline that you have when you do carb count
