Guys,

was just browsing the web to see if I could find any research linking protein to bG level rises (no luck so far, everything I can see quite emphatically states that pure protein does not affect sugar levels - try telling my body that) and came upon this report by Illinois University:

http://urbanext.illinois.edu/diabetes2/pdf/3.pdf

The extract that particularly spiked my interest (and possibly my anger levels) was the first few paragraphs at the top of page 2. Apparently, just like men, all carbs are the same....?!!!!!!!

Erm... GI anyone? oops!

To some extent I can see what they mean in that all carbs in isolation are pretty fast really. Not much difference between bread and sugar etc etc. But there are a notable differences here and there, and of course few of us eat carbs entirely on their own (as happens in GI tests)

Regarding conversion of protein/fat to glucose... seem to happen for me far less in the presence of a moderate amount of carbs.

This graph might be helpful for you though - http://www.diabetes-support.org.uk/info/?page_id=438

Frankly I would have stopped reading after the first bit of advice about having to eat at least three times a day and eating at the same time each day - this bears no relevance at all to modern insulin treatment too. The graph on page 3 is particularly hilarious too - apparently the way to good heath is to have your BG yo-yoing all over the shop. And even more hilariously, they describe this yo-yoing as 'keeping your BG more consistant'.

Benny I can invite you too if you like?? 😉

Re the graph it does say:
Below is a graph of blood glucose levels from a person without diabetes who has eaten 3 meals and two snacks in one day.
No matter what you do your BG readings are going to 'yo-yo' to some extent, the aim is to limit the peaks and troughs using either diet or drugs, if you are T2 and not on insulin you can only do this by maintaining a strict diet.

There is no mention of insulin or any type of diabetes treatment or diabetes type. If you are T2 with D/E control or even metformin the advice to eat 3 meals a day with restricted carbs is valid isn't it? (not sure about the snacking as this leads to weight gain).

True, it's supposed to be a normal graph but it looks like a heck of a lot of yo-yoing. I'd love them to actually put a proper mmol/l or mg/dl scale on that left axis to indicate what is 'normal' - I suspect most of us would find it very hard to keep to a normal range while eating that much and that often. 30g of carbs is a sandwich - how on earth do they expect people to eat three big meals a day and two sandwiches, and not put on weight or have their blood sugar all over the place?

Barking advice! Sadly all too typical.

I also thought 60g carb was a bit much for breakfast, I have a banana oat milk smoothie (about 30g), and lunch is about the same. Still can't loose the weight (and no I don't eat that many pork scratching bags😛), but the BGs are pretty level..
