Leave a comment on the BBC website as to how the NHS could improve the service and stop the waste of money being used for Diabetes.

As a Type 2 I feel that education is sadly lacking for many Type 2's and the use of a meter and test strips is frowned upon. This is a false economy as you cannot manage your diabetes if you do not know what your blood sugar numbers are and complications cost a lot more, as stated in this article it is 80% of the budget.

Don't know about Type 1, I am sure there must be something that members would like to say?

comments left. Hopefully (she says with a note of optimism) it will give us better treatment.

Thanks for the link Cheryl, mind you what they say is what most of us already know. Would be interesting to see if anyone takes note of the findings or patient views.

Oh this has cropped up again has it, well il leave a comment but ill be wasting my little pinkies thats a certain

A passing comment on BBC breakfast about this story. Horrifying that 80% of the spend on treating diabetes devoted to treating what are being described as preventable complications.

Time for a bit of a rethink on 'lots of carbs' / no test strips for T2s approach then?

Interesting to see the balance of cost between T1 and T2 which I'd not seen before

Cant quit see why type 2 is so much more expensive. I know its a numbers situation, but there must be some expensive drugs or complications with type 2 then.

Cant see where we leave a comment.😱

I think it's sheer weight of numbers slipper - only around 10% of people with diabetes have T1 (though we soak up 1/8th of the budget). We're the expensive ones to keep!

The comments section has been turned off Slipper. Too many people have replied with solutions I expect.🙄 If only the people with diabetes were listened to I am sure this could be resolved. Intervention, education etc. would all bring the costs down. Type1's report on here that they have never been offered a carb counting course, all types have reported no psychological input and don't get me started on Type2's being denied test strips.

Slipper, it's mainly because T2s are generally denied the education and tools needed to better understand and manage their condition so, having been set up to fail, many do and suffer the consequences in complications such as neuropathy. It was a huge relief to me when they changed my dx from T2 to 1.5, all of a sudden I was encouraged to test and given all sorts of support that just wasn't there before

Here you go same article compliments of the guardian http://www.guardian.co.uk/society/2012/apr/25/diabetes-treatment-bankrupt-nhs-generation

Comments can be left 🙂

The comments of some leave a lot to be desired. The know it all brigade are out there commenting on the "lazy, fat, slobs who deserve all they get" Until the media get it right, there will always be divisions.

We need something like this in the U.K. where Newspaper articles are sent to diabetics to decide the content is accurate and who know the right and wrong way to publish diabetes related articles.

Assistance in Accurate Reporting.

We did consider this on here a while back but it didn't get taken up.
