Hi
Just wanted to say thank you to this forum so informative and have taken alot of advice both personally and from the threads. I had no help from my doctor really, quick phone call, (eat better, move more, take medication.) Am yet to se my DN (appointment Friday) . Since being diagnosed with Type 2 with a hba1c of 73 only 4 weeks ago, i was so scared, worried about where to start what to do,felt like no one had time to help re gp but, i found this forum and i have followed the advice on here, and also cut down my carbs to 50/60g a day and increased the quality of the foods i have been eating lots of healthy fats(ive always been scared of high fat!) moderate protein and low carbs. I invested in a monitor as suggested on here and panicked so much when my readings started off at 14 mmol and 13s all times of the day including fasting and bedtime, but just within this short time frame, they are now in the 7s and 6 s and even a 5 thrown in! (i loved that 5) the worry of seeing double figures constantly and what was happening to my body has eased and although i know i still have lots of progress to make, im feeling cautiously pleased im going in the right direction . Am thinking of trying IF and Fasting also to help lose my excess weight. Any advice on this?
Thanks in advance 🙂

Hi @Zoel222 . I am impressed, you have done really well and it seems to me that with BGs like that you may have cracked the diabetes side of things.
Many people find that by going on the dietary regime you have (LCHF) that they lose weight .

I have not tried I F , but I know others here have and it worked for them.

Please let us know how you get in with your DN , I hope you find your appointment informative. .

I am sorry to say that most GPs receive very little training in diabetes , so don’t understand that that eatwell plate or whatever it’s called now, does not work for many with T2.

It's normal to in a complete panic at first but you soon get into a rhythm, as you are, so just take your time see how your carb reduction goes there is no rush. After sometime with the friendly help here it will all slip into place but your figures show what you are doing works, my weight loss wasn't something I focused too much on because with the carb reduction and abit of exercise it just reduced anyways so now I'm 2 1/2 stone down without really trying it stops then starts again so don't rush trying different things just yet your only 4wks in your hitting the 5's already which is great, your doing good keep going as you are :D .

I don't give a s**t what the GP's or DN's think about self testing BG, without out that I would have struggled big time I tested before and after each meal at first and now twice aday but it was the only way to see what foods were ok for ME, we are all different so what food is ok for you might not be for me and testing BG is the only way to know.

Well done

When I first started, I was religiously eating 3 times a day, even if I wasn't in the mood. It was quite a relief to discover that IF is fine to do. Then it got cold again!

Ps fab work!

It is great that you have got to grips with things @Zoel222 , and the reduction in your meter readings will certainly impact on your next HbA1c. It is such a shock at the start but I am pleased that you have found information on here useful and been able to have such an impact on your management.

Totally agree on the monitor front i was told by doc it was unnecessary but so glad i listened to everyone on here and got one because like you say its very individual on what you can and cant have. Plain wholemeal bread for example spiked me alot, but on a reccomendation on here tried a soya and seeded bread and can have a piece no problems, it really is trial and error. Thanks for taking the time to reply, good advice on the time frame aswell as feels like its been a lot longer than the actual few weeks it has.

I really have, definitely has helped me feel im not on my own and have people i can ask the questions to who do have the experience. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Thanks for the reply. I feel the same, really struggle with breakfast but have literally forced myself to have it for years as thought it was the 'healthy' thing to do. Its a relief to know this is not true!

Congratulations. You are doing brilliantly. Look forward to you reporting a significantly reduced HbA1c reading after your next test. Regarding IF, for me, breakfast and evening meal are quite important but I don't really need lunch. Sometimes I don't even bother much with an evening meal either. It is surprising how much less food I need these days! I tend to just eat when I am hungry rather than by the clock, but I do usually like to start the day with food. Everyone is different, so do what feels right to you.

Very recently diagnosed here too. Without BG checks you really have no clue what foods spike you or how to tune your diet as T2 is as individual and as complex as we are as individuals...

My prime DSN and GP both advocate testing maybe because both of them are themselves diabetic but the secondary DSN is a bit of tick boxing nightmare who I try to avoid wherever possible.

You've done sensationally well

Thank you i will let you know when i have my blood test although im assuming it will be awhile yet, im too eager for it already. Its so nice to hear that you along with alot of people on here eat when they are hungry, it makes so much more sense to me, after being told for years skipping meals or not following a schedule is wrong thing to do its a relief to hear this is not so. Before diagnosis i had been adding snacks in between meals i didnt much want in the hope it would "speed" my metabolism up to lose the weight i need to and now realise i wasnt doing myself any favours!

Thank you for saying that, its great to be able to share on here, i think my other half although very supportive is probably a bit sick about me constantly talking about my blood sugars and all things diabetic morning noon and night . Im hoping as i get more knowledge about does and donts for me it will just become the new normal. Great that you have mainly suportive care, im hoping fof the same when i finaly see the DN for first rime Friday.

There is quite a bit of evidence that the culture of snacking on high carb foods is the very thing that starts of the cycle of insulin resistance and high blood glucose and increasing weight. A good explanation in Dr Jason Fung's book the Diabetic Code. Promotes LCHF and intermittent fasting as a way to prevent and reverse Type 2 diabetes which has success for some people.
It is important to choose a way that suits you and that you can maintain and that may be quite different to how somebody else chooses, all you can do is look at the options, take on board the advice but at the end of the day it is up to you.

I think i am slowly finding my way and working out whats right for me. Ive just read The Obesity code which made alot of sense to me and just starting on The Diabetic Code now, the IF and Fasting does really interest me and the reasons behind it. Thanks for the advice 🙂
