Teething problems.....hopefully sorted!

Those of you who know about my stupid constant tooth problems......

After being in absolute agony at work today (to the point where my sugars shot up and i was sat down crying my eyes out unable to move!) i found yet another hole in my tooth!! GRR so had to make an emergency appointment where i was given antibiotics and told i needed 3 root canals!!! 3!!

BUT i spoke to my dad and he has agreed to lend me all the money i need to get all the work done! so hopefully over the summer they will all be sorted and i will emerge a much happier...somewhat healthier person!

Has anyone had a root canal? do they hurt? what happens if i have a hypo in the dentist chair?? GRR i hate dentists!!
 
I've had a root canal - 5 years ago, didnt feel a thing after the anaesthetic injection. Seem to remember having a dull pain a couple of hours after it wore off but that went quite soon and no problems since - watch me jinxing it now though :D

I'm type 2 so cant help with the hypo question - would suggest you tell the dentist you're diabetic if he/she doesn't know already.
 
Although a type 2 - I am on insulin and tablets

As you as you tell the dentist you are on insulin - he will take that into account. I would advise you eat before your appt - with your reading around 7 plus.

Last year I have root canal work done - no pain on the day - just an ache for a couple of days

Hiya! I feel for you!! Toothache is deffo the one pain I hate and i usually end up in tears as its the only way I can deal with the pain.

Glad to hear your getting it sorted, as Hazel has suggested, eat before and try to have slightly higher levels. I have had a root canal, no pain, take some anti inflammatory and/or painkillers for after the injection wears off, depending on your threshhold for pain!

I have had a hypo while in the dentist chair, the dentist has everything you'll need, mine stocks a sugary orange powder drink which can be drunk through a straw if you have a numb mouth(!) it does taste vile but it is a solution in an emergency hypo. I would suggest a tube of Hypo-Gel but that also could get messy if you are numb and can't feel it dribbling out the mouth!!!!!😱

Good luck with your dental work, life will seem better when the horrid tooth pain is gone!
 
I had root canal. I didn't enjoy it one bit because of all the drilling. A year to the day after it was done the tooth brokes (I was dipping my biscuit in my tea and the tooth broke on a soft biscuit). The treatment wasn't painfull, I just don't like high pitched sounds, and I especially don't like them in my mouth...

I have since been told by a dentist that it is better to have the tooth removed as it has only about a 15% success rate.
 
I had root canal work when I lived in Norfolk about 8 years ago. Didn't feel any pain once the injection was done, just needed a few painkillers that night so I could sleep while the gum calmed down after all the drilling in the tooth (it jars the gum a bit I guess). It seemed a long process with me just sitting there and letting it be done but I've had no trouble with the tooth since then.

I certainly wouldn't have a tooth out these days unless it was absolutely necessary but then I trust my dentist down here in Somerset to care for my teeth in the best way he can. I saw him first as a private patient (because they weren't taking on any more NHS) but have since changed to NHS within the practice and his care is just as good as it was when I was paying full price for it.

My previous dentist, when we were living in a town near to where we are now, told me I need all four back teeth crowned at a price of ?250 per tooth and that was 5 years ago. We have since changed dentists because I didn't trust him (he said he could only do the crown work privately because NHS wouldn't pay him to do it) but if I had needed that much work done I'm sure my present dentist would have done it by now but he has never mentioned it.

Good luck with your dental work and hope it all settles down for you once it's done. Seeing Dentists aren't my favourite way of spending a day either !

Got mine out a few weeks ago after the dentist told me i could spend a lot of money on it and still might have to get it out if it wasn't a success.
Getting the tooth extracted was painless.
 
Personaly I'd rather have the tooth taken out. I hate the drill and if I can avoid having it in my mouth I will.

We are all different, and root canal does work for some people. I myself wouldn't consider having it done again, but we have to make choices on the information we are given.
 
Good luck with it Dan I never go to dentists myself atm im having chronic agony with loose tooth but it will fall out eventually just gotta keep away from apples and such like lol.

Last time I had a painfully wobbly tooth it was an abcess on the gum, so it is worth getting things checked.
 
I try and get appointments early in the morning or afternoon - so that I am quite a way from when I would normally eat. It won't remove the risk of a hypo but for me it l feel it lessens it.

i have thought about gettin them all taken out but i dont want to be left with 3 gaps in my mouth! :(

well the dentist i saw yesterday (as an emergency) said i needed 3 root canals so i need to make an appointment with MY dentist which is a totally new one and see what they say needs doing and what the options are...thanks for all the advice tho, the dentist is the worst fear i have and now i am diabetic my fears have just increased, my mate said she had a root canal and they hit her nerve during the treatment and it was really painfull despite having 4 injections so im a little worried!!

Can i not go to hospital and be put under anaesthetic or something and they can do the whole lot??

I've had two done. When you have had a root canal done then it makes the tooth more brittle, and for one of mine I had various fillings over the years as bits broke off. The other one I had done has been fine. The one that kept breaking eventually had to be removed, and it may have been due to my undiagnosed diabetes - when I had it done originally it was because I had an infection. About ten years later I got another infection and my dentist said that it was the original one which had lain dormant all those years, sparked into life by my high BG levels! That is the only tooth I have had removed and I'm 52. I remember being told that you should try and avoid the removal of a tooth if at all possible, as the resulting gap can have a detrimental effect on the remaining teeth which lose some support as a consequence. Not sure where your dentist got the 15% success rate from, sounds very low to me and isn't my experience.

Nikki, in theory a root canal shouldn't hurt as it is done to remove dead and infected tissue. With my first one I had a temporary dressing put in for a couple of weeks as not all of the nerve had died - eventually the dentist was able to complete it. The second one I had done didn't hurt at all. It can be an uncomfortable procedure, depending on which tooth it is, but fillings are more potentially painful in my experience. Good luck!

Sorry, never had a root canal before! but you shouldn't feel a thing under anaesthetic, maybe a bit fragile afterwards though. The female Dr at Guys Hospital who is dealing with my teeth/Gum/Bone problems is Diabetic herself, Type 1. Also stress and worry can put your BS up. Take some Glucose tablets/Lucozade or Jelly Babies with you. Good luck. Sheena x
 
Update bump.....NOT GOOD

Right so today i saw MY dentist finally! and it wasnt the greatest start to my day........

On the upside my new dentist is really nice and easy to talk to, very friendly and seems to know what he is doing which is good!

So according to him this is the major work i need doing ASAP:

2 root canals, one crown and an extraction! which will be ?204 (plus another ?90 on top as he is going to use different implements for the root canals that are usually used in private treatments as the tooth is less likely to get re-infected afterwards)

And the other not asap treatments are another 4 fillings which i didnt even know i needed! He has written these down as ?120 per tooth!! I take it he has classes these as white fillings and if i were to have metal the price would go down considerably!

I nearly fell off the chair when he showed my the end figure...... ?894!! 😱😱

But some treatments not needed straight away i think im looking at ?294 for now and im hoping my dad will help me out with that! otherwise i dont know what to do :confused:

I am still in pain and really scared now iv never had a root canal or an extraction! :'(
 
Aw Nikki :( Not only do you have to go through all this horrible stuff, but it costs a fortune as well! You'll be glad you had it done when it is all over, but I know how difficult it is when you don't have much money and finding yourself presented with such a big expense.

I hope that that the dentist makes a good job of it and that once all this is over that's your tooth-related problems over and done with until you're old and grey! 🙂

The root canals extraction and crown are on the NHS (?204) but he is going to charge an extra ?90 as he will use the implements that are usualy used for private treatments because the implements they use for private work are better and allow more pulp or something to be removed and so the tooth is less likely to get re-infected. He is doing this instead of charging me private which would be ?200 per tooth.

As for the other fillings he has down as ?120 each i think he has written these as white fillings, which is done privately, but i can change it if i want to the metal fillings, which arent as good and on the nhs will be in the band 2 at ?47

does that make sense?

I've had three done in the past and once the anaesthetic has taken effect you don't feel a thing. Afterwards as there's no nerve there any more it won't hurt either, although it might just be a bit sore.🙂
