Hey all, currently sitting in hospital waiting for Dafne to start... Not a good start that only two of us have turned up though... Have heard many mixed feelings About this so wish me luck!

Here's to better and tighter control 🙂 happy Monday all x

I hope you enjoy DAFNE. From experience of these courses (I did DESMOND and Xpert diabetes course) they make plans for a larger group and at most only 6 ever turn up. If there are only a couple of you you will get more of the trainers time and will be able to talk more about the things concerning you.

Hope it goes well for you - and that the others turn up! I've heard mostly positive things about DAFNE so make the most of it - let us know what you think! 🙂

Any more turned up by dinnertime, Grainger? I'm guessing that's the next time you can log on.

I found DAFNE life changing. It's given me so much more freedom, once I got to grips with it! Hope you enjoy the week!! :D

Hope you enjoy the course - I've heard great things about it 🙂

Ooh hows it going Mrs? Hope more people turned up! Makes me cross people get a place on these courses which cost the NHS so much to run then just don't turn up!!! There was 1 no show on my course too, but 6 of us there.

Hey All...
So day one over and thankfully there are now 5 of us in total! Turns out many people got lost in the hospital!
So... it's going OK so far... although been told not to test after eating at all which I'm going to struggle with and my reading before I left today was 14.8!! Sitting on my butt all day clearly does not do good things to me.

Have already learnt some stuff and think although repetitive and some of it I already know it's going to be interesting and hopefully I'll get tighter control if I stick to the principles?!

On the positive we are all being given at least one if not two ketone meter readers (Glucomen LX Plus) as apparently new rules will be coming out regarding what meters doctors are going to have to provide and this is one.

Final note, and it may be what others consider bad but it's my best HbA1c ever - got my result today 7.6% 🙂 🙂 🙂 So i'm still heading in the right direction and agreed a goal of 6.5% with my DSN today.

Northerner - I will definitely recommend this forum to all! (Already did to one lady today 🙂)

Great news on the HbA1c, and thank you for spreading the word 🙂 Hope tomorrow goes well! 🙂

Sounds great Grainger!

Hang in there with the 'No you *must* do it this way' stuff. That's the only negative thing I've ever heard about DAFNE - but I think they do it to start everyone on a 'level playing field' rather than inheriting mistakes/errors form years of diabetes guesswork.

Even if you know deep down that the advice/ratio/correction factor or whatever they are giving you won't work long term just go with it for the few days so they can see the results and make adjustments from there.

Hope tomorrow goes well

Re not testing after meals - I think it's probably good advice for the week of the DAFNE course as it is not one of the readings you need to help you work out your ratios. Once you have those fixed accurately you can start working out what to do with the post meal spikes - in my experience DAFNE doesn't really help with those but advice I've read on here is helping - though I'm not there yet.

I done Desmond a year ago, was the youngest on the course but that didn't matter, was life changing for me and also mother, who came for moral support for me and her partner has type 2

Thanks all - planning to take as much on board as possible and then use all the info on here for the rest!! 🙂
I feel really lucky to be on this course considering I've had D for less than a year so definitely looking to get levels better and get my A1C under 7% and as near to 6.5 as I can!
We get to ask questions to a consultant on day 4... anyone got any really good questions I could ask? Apparently it's all written down in advance so they don't know who's asking and they have to ask any question asked... could be fun!

Ask him what he considers to be excessive testing - I'd be interested to know if he is one of those who thinks '4 injections = 4 tests' 😉

I found the total opposite on my DAFNE course, the educators and the consultant we saw (a she btw 😉 ) all said especially while trying to establish things, and the stupid new rules by DVLA, that for people who drive particularly that 4 tests a day is usually not enough!

The DAFNE principles say that as long as each test is for a purpose, and you can use that information to help in your care of your condition then it's ok. 🙂

It's mostly GP's that have this attitude above about "excessive" testing - probably cos the prescribing of them comes down to them and their budgets!!

Hope today is going well Hannah, let us know!

I asked the consultant about pumps, and what she thought of them - and also about any other future treatments out there, she went into a bit of details about studies etc she has read of and heard about.

I also asked about pregnancy and why pregnancy can speed up things like retinopathy as I didn't fully understand why.

Cannot for the life of me remember what else we all asked - tbh there wasn't loads of questions for her as so much of is is covered in DAFNE before she came along.

Glad things went well for you on your first day. I did a DESMOND a couple of weeks ago, which was a bit repetative but isi always usefull to have the reminders...
