Hey all....

So day two done and dusted 🙂

Have to say I'm really enjoying it although finding some of it quite condescending and although I appreciate that some people won't have done any carb counting before playing with plastic food just makes me feel like a kid! On the plus side, learning some top tips on visual counting without weighing.

Did learn today that a long hot bath can speed up insulin absorption! I would never in a million years ever have considered that as a possible reason for a hypo one night.

We had the talk on hypo's today and I found this really informative. I've never had a "severe" hypo and hearing others talk about it really scared me to be honest and my OH couldn't join us today so my DSN has said if he comes into hospital she'll show him what to do which I thought was nice.

One question I've decided to raise to the consultant is: "Can we donate a kidney". It's a topic close to my heart and I was wondering what you all think?

Glad to hear Day 2 went well 🙂 I don't think we are allowed to donate kidneys, I'm afraid.

edit: it seems it is OK, but whether they are accepted here yet, I don't know, it will be interesting to hear what the consultant says:

My son's first every hypo was in the bath! I learnt from here that it was the hot water that sped up the absorption rate.

A question I'd ask the consultant would be to do with liver dumps. I would like to know the mechanism for these, because I'm sure I get them sometimes while trying to do a basal test, and I usually feel extremely hungry around the time when it happens. I'm wondering whether that's a cause or a symptom.

So.. I'm officially a DAFNE grad!

Can say i'd recommend this course to people... if not for any other reason that being able to concentrate on levels and patterns for a whole week without work interrupting!

So, my question time with the consultant was interesting... Northener, he's a Dafne educator so was pro testing and also does a lot of the antenatal (he's the "baby doctor" according to my DSN) so he is pro testing after meals to so spikes etc can be identified and also spoke about split doses so all in all I think you'd approve 🙂

Maryplain, the liver dumps issue was briefly discussed but my understanding was mixed to be honest. It looks like the brain can trick the liver into thinking one thing so it reacts even if there's glucose in the blood - eg. when exercising sometimes. I wouldn't be able to explain this well though so maybe it could be a DSN question? Sorry I can't be more help.

My kidney question unfortunately is still unanswered as he didn't want to say either way because he wasn't sure. He has offered to speak to the transplant team for me though as it would be a live donor situation as opposed to after death which is thought may be a no (but again said that this is constantly changing so would have to check). So hopefully I'll get an answer soon (fingers crossed).

Was great to learn more this week and hopefully now I'll be able to contribute on here in a more helpful way.

Hope everyone is enjoying there Friday night - time for a glass of wine I think 🙂

Oh, and Northener, I mentioned this site to everyone so hopefully you may get some more new faces!

Excellent! Glad to hear you have found the course so useful and you sound really motivated 🙂 Thanks for letting the others know about the forum and for asking the questions - hope you get a positive answer soon regarding the transplant 🙂

Thank you 🙂 it's a bizaare feeling to want it to be yes to be honest but I really do want the option (my brother is likely to need in the next 3 years)

Glad to hear you have had such a positive week H. You sound so much more confident now :D

Definitely Sue 🙂 it's incredible how different I feel about diabetes now to a year ago.. still can't quite believe it's been almost a year already!

Turns out (for me anyway) that knowledge is definitely power and having that time to really concentrate has made all the difference in my confidence 🙂

Trust you are well? x
