Squash juice with sweeteners

Hi,

I have tried now to measure in real time to see if my blood sugar levels are affected by 0 sugar (actually it says it has 0.5 g sugar per 100 ml) squash with sweeteners. I was having 5.1 mmol/L before drinking the orange glass with sweetener. I did drink it quickly, in about 30 seconds 250 ml. All of a sudden, in a few minutes, my CGM monitor went high from 5.1 to 5.8 mmol. I checked the fingers also and it was worse, saying it's 6.6 mmol/L. How is this possible? Shouldn't squash with sweeteners not raise the blood sugar and especially so much? Also did an experiment with diet coke and the same happened, the blood sugar spiked similarly. Any explanation as to why this happens?

It may depend on exactly which sweetener and which squash it is as there may be some natural sugars. In any case your readings in the region of 5-6 are not really high especially if it was immediately after drinking.
When people are testing the effect of a food or drink they would normally not test until after 2 hours. With blood glucose monitors there is an allowable 15% accuracy range so readings will be +/- that amount of the reading.
Looking for trends rather than absolute values to give guidance.
