Hello folks!

I'm begining to wonder if I now need the morning dose of my levemir. This is because ofthe past few weeks I've been steadily reducing it yet I've still be dropping down to hypos between 11am and midday. Is this a sign that I might not be needing it? This comes after finally cracking my night time levemir dose which it seems I was getting far too much of. That came down from 32 at the end of April/May to 24 at the moment. This means that pretty much every morning blood sugar I have is spot on bar one or two. My morning levemir dose is five right now. This has however, been steadily reduced over the past few weeks to its current level from twelve units. I'm going to cut it to three tomorrow to see how things go. If I can see that I'm stopping dropping to border line hypo at the times I've said would I then need to carry on with this injection?

Thanks,

Tom H

Hi Tom,

Well, if you drop it so low that you can't inject a single unit, then I guess the answer is yes, Levemir does tend to have a life of 18 or so hours, but there are a number of people I'm told who only have one injection of Levemir a day.

If you get so low that you can only really inject 2 units then its either stop at 2 units, or stop all together.

However, you do need to keep the testing up, just in case you change suddenly.

Have you done any basal testing in the morning to see that it is the levemir causing the 11am hypos, and not that the novorapid/humalog at breadkfast is too large?

I wouldn't have a clue how to do basal testing. I've been cutting down my morning novorapid. It's now at 9 units. What I eat fro breakfast is two weetabix with realu sugar and milk; a small glass or orange juice and to pieces of toast. I think that's al i need for that. Time to sit down and work out the carbs in that I think.

Todays hypo I know was caused by the novorapid being too much - I gave 12 units instead of 9.

I take my levimir at night once a day and so far I haven't had any probs, I take 18 units, and it seems to last 24hrs, well I'm not going high at the end of the day, unless I've gorged on a hell of a lot

!

Ive just swapped form one injection of Levemir at 10pm to a split dose , I did

find that it was running out after 18 ish hours , my levels are a lot better now

so a split dose works best for me , i have 16 units 10pm and 16 units 7am

I've always been told too that hypos are more often caused by novorapid than basal insulin. The role of your basal is to keep your blood sugars steady, not bring them up or down (sorry if you know this already!). I was on lantus a while ago, going to bed high and waking up on target because it was bringing me down over night. My evening dose of levemir is now right and whatever I go to bed at I wake up at +/- a mmol or 2.

Type 1 Sue gave me some good advice on basal testing. She told me to wake up and test, taking basal insulin. Then to not inject any short acting insulin and not to eat anything for breakfast and test every hour till lunch. Then eat lunch as normal and have a normal day. On another day then to do the same but eat breakfast and fast over lunch, again testing every hour. Then on another day do the same fasting over dinner. Then in the night if you can manage! Going by this your blood sugars should remain steady over the time you are not eating or taking short acting insulin. Doing this a couple of times really helped me to sort my basal dosages out. Hope that helps!

thanks for the info , i might try that .

Good explanation Munjeeta, it really is worth doing if you can. but I must admit I hate doing it with a passion.

Has Type1Sue been on recently?
